Fresh install of 7.6.1 on 3400c

Hi.

Now that I have started to use my 3400 on a more regular basis, I have been noticing many software problems; probably due to whatever the previous owner had installed/hacked with before I took it over.  I'd like to do a fresh install of 7.6.1.  At my disposal are:

  • System 7.6 install CD
  • Powerbook 3400 7.6.1 updates (both the floppy and net install variants)

I've heard that 7.6.1 is the minimum for the 3400, and that it cannot use the generic 7.6.1 update (needing the PowerBook 3400 specific one).  How do I go about installing the OS to this machine?  Will it even boot if I only have 7.6?  I was considering:

  1. Format HD
  2. Install 7.6 from CD
  3. On reboot, install the 7.6.1 updates from floppy

Any idea if this plan of attack would work?

For reference, I intend on doing some coding on this with CodeWarrior and OpenTransport; I'll be trying to hack together some simple implementations of web-apps I use (mainly Twitter and Evernote).

Thanks,

-10d

On how to remove the PRAM battery - the connector to the power board is under the box/chassis the hard drive is in. The battery is glued under the speaker panel above the keyboard. Disconnect the wire and carefully pry the battery out.

Under the forum rules, links to pirated software are disallowed.

If you were to search online for the installation media, you may find a way to buy it (on eBay or whatever) or a way to download it from somewhere.

If somebody has a copy to lend you, they may post in the thread or contact you. I've paid a few bucks to use a copy of somebody's IRIX CDs before, as an example.

I understand why you'd think that this is piracy.  However, though the copyright office doesn't seem to have anything filed on System 7... (http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?PostSearchSortBy1=PUB_DATE&HID=15349189&HID=4308967&HID=15246958&HID=15426834&HID=15554353&HID=15765585&HID=15843317&HID=15843319&HID=15803203&HID=15775838&HID=15744662&HID=4881719&HID=15672884&HID=15715754&HID=15696339&HID=15751067&HID=5860093&HID=5779639&HID=15711612&HID=15430253&HID=15488889&HID=15650658&HID=5860125&HID=15788669&HID=19246810&PostSearchSortBy2=NULL&Search_Arg=Mac+OS&Search_Code=TALL&ti=26%2C0&CNT=25&PID=kMuAInYT1svC8F5AsqOEaGtwm&SEQ=20150309204421&REC=0&RD=0&RC=0&MAILADDY=&EMAILADDRESS=None&LIMITBUTTON=0), normally that wouldn't cede any creators' rights.

The patent office does (http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4806:vlwqo9.6.17) have a record on file.  However, at least on the consumer end, this would likely fall under a fair use exception.  I haven't read the forum rules.  Lending a copy is the low-tech version of what I did.  It would seem, without having read them, that offering to lend someone a copy of software to pirate is the more cumbersome form of the identical infraction.

I also think it's possible that something in the license attaches System 7 to Mac hardware.  That is certainly the case for OS X, which as far as I understand is also not purchasable.  So there may be a connection between ownership of the 3400 and ownership of the software that came with it.  I'd have to do more research than I want to right now.  But these issues are, I suppose, immaterial to forum policy.

Apparently the editing just expired.  [i actually missed your eBay suggestion - that's also part of my fascination - buying an almost certainly used copy... would that convey the license?  Would giving it away convey the license?  If so is there any legal distinction with doing the same thing through a server?]

I honestly find it fascinating from a legal perspective.  I sent a request for clarification to Apple a few minutes ago asking 1) a) Does the 3400c give license to Mac OS 7.6 [probably not specifically]; b ) does the working copy of 7.6 he has grant some license [possibly?]; 2) How does one legally acquire 7.6?

[Obviously that was partly off-topic but the same holds to the Restore CD.  Does the license with that software pass through the individual buyer or through the machine - can that buyer then pass the license on [and so on] and if so to how many people?  - Because the link I posted was to the Install/Restore CD.]
