Extremely crazy iBook G3

Thought I got some ideas about macs, as I own more than 10 of them, and using strictly MacOS 9 since 1999, i wanted to help a friend of mine to setup her iBook G3 500 in cool ways. After replacing the display (and found out that replacing the inverter was not necessary as the backlight was broken, and we than got a whole display for around $25), we installed a new Harddisk with 160GB (ok 132GB). So we wanted to install 9.2.2 and 10.4 as her new HD has plenty of space and the 10.2.8 is slow like, ...

OK. problems started. As OS9 user I couldn´t find those great dual boot tutorials from aroud 2004 at the net anymore, ...

So I began with 9 as I thought X later, if I could remember correctly. 9 was no problem and partitioning and installation done after 20 minutes. But than the horror began.

From the moment 9 was installed, I couldn´t get any other system to boot from CD. Not OS X not Ubuntu (which she requests recently to get a triple-boot system) not OS 9! The same CD I installed the system from before was not bootable now, ... !?

So I used hours of trying this and that. Later I tried to get familiar with the OF tried "ide1" "cd:" "boot cd:" etc. etc. nothing worked. Tried to start the install application within 9 resoulted in "cannot change to CD as startup volume". Trying to select the CD inside the control panel "startup volumes" directly was possible but started again the installed 9 from HD, ...

Later, at an Linux forum (!) I found the hint of using "shift-alt-command-del" for booting from CD. That worked at some point, but only when the iBook was so confused that it didn´t find the installed OS 9, ...

Fine - booted into 10.4 and got a kernel panic - again and again. Well the startup worked only sometimes from CD, most times it booted again the HD with 9, ...

Again several kernel panics with "no driver for this hardware powerbook 4.1"(!!) directly after that funky grey/blue apple, ... when I tried to boot from CD. Well than the 9 also was gone what I could change with booting from the 9CD (only with "shift-alt-command-del" it didn´t work with "C" at any time after the first boot).

Hargh, ... :(

Than I gave Ubuntu 9.04 a try. It booted with yaboot "live video=ofonly" but only up to the X11 problem screen in 4 bit or something, ...

Than I had to insert the 9CD again to make the installed from HD 9 availaible again, ...

Absolutely crazy! Finally I installed Classilla and Gregs Browser to provide a minimum of usability (for her) and gave up. But nobody will belive me that this is no matter of sabotage at OS X from my side, as I strictly use 9! So please help me with every idea you got, to get this dual (or triple) boot up and running, ...

The stock drives in early snow iBooks are notoriously bad, and I've experienced many weird errors installing OSes when they were on their way out. Can you try booting from an external optical drive?

JB

Could be that the DVD drive doesn´t work correctly. But I had no problems with reading CDs and DVDs at OS 9 at all. Only booting works only sometimes. And it works well when no OS at the HD is installed or detected, ...

Are there new replacements availaible recently?

Any dualboot article / tutorial / wiki-entry etc.?

Yes, the SuperDrives in iBooks are absolute garbage. I once owned an iBook G4 (early 2004 model), and I must have gone through 3 SuperDrives during its lifespan, up until the motherboard died in Nov 2008.

Not sure about replacements, but finding a spare iBook with a working SuperDrive should be adequate. I doubt there are any Apple Stores in Austria.
