External CDROM and Powerbook 180, no go

I have a nice powerbook 180, I would going to try to do the resedit hack and install OS 8.1. However, whenever I plug a SCSI CDROM into the computer it won't boot, just hangs. When I unplug it boots just fine. Tried messing with SCSI ID numbers on the back of the CDROM but no go. I have an external HD that works just fine with the powerbook

Any idea whats going on here? I think it some sort of SCSI conflict but I figured changing the ID of the CDROM would fix that.

Have you tried putting the CD-ROM in the middle of the chain with the HDD on the end?

Is the CD-ROM terminated?

I don't know about the 180, but the PB100 docs required an additional pass thru terminator on the end of the PB SCSI cables for additional termination.

All external Apple CD-Rom drives are unterminated so you have to use a pass-through terminator in order to get it working.

SCSI ID of the internal hard drive is by default 0, I would be surprised if anyone would have changed it in the powerbook.
