Extended Keyboard II

Only a minor conquest, but I'm pleased with it as I am a fan of mechanical keyboards and have fond memories of typing on the Extended II when I was at school.

I found this one on Ebay for £8. It's sold 'as is' and untested, but for the price I thought it was worth a shot. Awaiting delivery at the moment - I'm fully expecting some cleaning work to be done when it arrives, but assuming it works OK I think I have picked up a bargain!

Out of interest, does anyone know if keyboards can also suffer from bad caps in the same way as motherboards?

So far, I've yet to have capacitor issues with a keyboard... So, I think you'll be fine. The '87-'88 vintage M0115 on my IIfx still works like new. My spare has a couple keys that don't work, but, that's just a matter of replacing the key switches with good ones.

Nice snag, I'm back to using the aircraft carrier again. I needed to have the rodent's ADB passthru on the side. The center mounted prot on the AppleDesign made it cable length challenged. For the most part I live with the mushy feel of it because of its nice long, uncoiled cable for ToyTime, but it sure is nice to go mechanical while I'm using the Beige G3 as my main mac for a while.

I believe we have one thread from this year about a keyboard that had the few caps in it go bad. I believe it was a gen I ADB keyboard. So, apparently they can go bad, it's just unusual.

I think there are a couple 10uf 16v caps in the AEKII that can go bad causing oddities.

Pretty much the AEKII is my favorite vintage keyboard.

the IIgs keyboard is my second favorite.

My Favorite modern keyboard is apple aluminum keyboard /w keypad. they are rugged as hell, and i like the keys.

Mine at work gets nasty… I mist it with windex and wipe it clean.. and its just like new after.

To bad the Wireless one isn't like that.

The EXII KB is a really nice KB, its what I use with my desktop ADB bus macs. The keys have a great feel and are quieter than other legendary mechanical keyboards like the IBM Model M.

The EXI has a slightly different feel, its a little more clicky, but about the same.

One thing for sure is that great keyboards are hard to come by in this era. Apples keyboards are pretty good, the ThinkPad keyboards are as good as ever, and the IBM Model M is still produced, but modernized to have a USB interface.

Enjoy your new mechanical KB.

Unicomp still makes bucking spring keyboards with PS/2 interfaces. While new Alps key switches aren't being made, there are plenty of vendors selling mechanical keyboards using the various Cherry brand switches. The AEKII is a nice board, but none of them have really tactile keys, and they certainly don't click.
