Error type # 41 Oh no - black cannon ball!

Hi folks....

My color classic is giving me an error message when ever I try to shut it down.  When I select "Shut Down" from the menu, I receive a pop up that says

"Sorry.  System error has occurred "installer"  Error Type 41".

I see a black cannon ball.  In the body of the error message is another "shut down" button.  When I click it, the Color Classic acts like it wants to shut down.  All the icons disappear and the screen changes color but it never shuts off.  I have to manually reach around for the shut off switch on the back of the color classic.

When I boot again, I see the nag message telling me I did not shut down properly last time.

My motherboard is a Color Classic II motherboard. I have the very first version of Tech Tools Pro installed on this computer.  I ran all the tests before hand and I could not find anything that failed the tests... When I run the tests again, it still can not find anything wrong.

This is a clean fresh install of 7.6.1.  I am running a CF card adapter rather then a SCSI hard drive.

Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this problem?  If it were my car, I would try to decide if it was fuel or spark.  Can I trouble shoot something to decide if this is software or hardware?

Thanks in advance...

If I remember correctly, the Color Classic doesn't shut down completely on its own.  It typically goes to a black screen with a dialogue box that says, "It is now safe to turn off your Macintosh."

Not sure what that "installer" app is doing.  You can see if there's an item in the Shutdown Items folder in your system folder.

Yeah, but the "it is now safe to shut down your macintosh" screen shouldn't generate an improper shutdown message when you next start up. (My Classic used to do that too - the "safe to shut down" message, not the error. Memories!)

Good luck, jack, I honestly have no idea what is causing the problem you are describing.

nope nope. Color Classic is soft-start, and soft-shutdown.

the bomb "installer" makes me worry as an installer shouldnt run on shutdown, check your shutdown items folder in the system folder for something stuffed in there. Also scan for viruses.

Thank you gentleman for the help.  I will look in the system folder and shutdown folder and see what I can find.

This started after a fresh load of 7.6 from a original Apple branded CD. All that install, I installed Stuffit expander.  I will remove that and see what happens.   I have a update to 7.6.1, so I installed that to see if that would solve the problem.  It did not.

I did not think about viruses.  I will check that out and report back.

Thanks.

So true Paralel. A bomb.... mea culpa.

Bigmessowires - I had Uniserver re cap, wash and test this motherboard about 6 months ago (he did a great job).  But who knows - the board is over 20 years old...

When I come home tonight I thought I would check macintosh garden for anti virus software.   If they do not have any, can someone suggest a place to look?

Do I recall a key command that can be use at start up to disables extensions?  I will google this and see if my memory is ok.

I will also delete Stuffit Expander.  That is the only software I have added other then the first version of Tech Tools Pro.  I can delete that as well.

I could not ask for a better image on my screen.  That Sony CRT is stunning.  I can not see how it could look any better new out of the box.

Thanks again for the tips.  I will give it a try tonight.

Can you boot it off of a floppy or CD and see if it bombs? If so, you will know its not the system installation. If it doesn't, you'll know its software in some way.

Last night I tried to boot to a CD.  It booted just fine.  When I selected shut down, the CC shut down with out issue.  I then booted to a floppy.  It booted fine.  When I selected shut down, it shut down properly. I guess this means software issues....?

I am not completely sure I formatted this CF card correctly before I did the install of 7.6.  Could this be my problem?

As techknight says, check your Shutdown Items folder to ensure there's nothing there. if that doesn't reveal anything, hold down Shift during boot-up to bypass extensions. To be safe, keep it held until your desktop appears.

My apologies gentleman for not being as clear as I should have been.

If I understand you correctly, I have nothing in my shut down folder.  I will look again.

I will boot with the shift key down until my desktop appears.  If I still have any issue, I will delete Tech Tools Pro, Stuffit expander and any related files, and then report back.

Thanks for the many tips.

It is working!

I removed Tech Tools Pro and Stuffit Expander.  I did not have anything in my shut down folder.  I looked for a extension from Tech Tools Pro.  I could not find one.  But I am running the very first release of Tech Tools Pro, so maybe it did not have one this early on.

I will try the install of 7.6 from the Apple 7.6 CD again.

Thanks for the help everyone!
