Enable LPR printing on 7.6.1 Mac - LW 8.6?

Hi,

New printer in the mix and would like to enable LPR printing on a 7.6.1 Mac.

Several sites mention installing LW 8.6 as the solution. Apple's "older software" download site links 8.5.1 and 8.6.1, but found plain 8.6 in the parent directory of the linked files.

Is plain 8.6 the general recommendation for this configuration?

Thanks.

BTW - a recently released 2012 model HP Laserjet (with PS3 emulation) still works fine from OS9 and the Generic Postscript PPD (think it's LW 8.7).

check out my website, the 7.5.5 install page has links to all the stuff for the built-in LPR printing. I dont' remember what version I recommend there, but it's the version I was running for years on my SE/30 and printing by LPR protocol.

That's lucky. I've found that most of the HP LaserJet printers won't work with generic PostScript drivers because of the host-based printing system. It's also why every time there's an OS X update, it breaks the stupid printer driver.

Thanks. I'll check out the 7.5.5 link.

Perhaps because this is a new LaserJet Pro 400 series monochrome with PostScript 3 built into the printer (M401n/$200). Have not yet tried non-PS printers with any Mac, even 10.6+, but can imagine host-based printing to be a problem.

That's lucky. I've found that most [HP LaserJets] won't work with generic PostScript drivers because of the host-based printing system.

Update:

Decided I was too lazy to deal with multiple disk images, and went with the LW 8.6.smi self mounting image installer. It ran quickly, and upon restart used the "new" Desktop Printer Utility to add the 2012 printer (LPR) as Generic PostScript. Everything tried printed fine.

Thanks for the help.
