ok, so that newton I mentioned here is MINE!! wel, almost...

I responded to the CL posting, made an offer of $30, and this was the response:

[:D] ]'> i'm so excited. i've always wanted a newton. Actually a 2100, but this is just as good. slower proc, 5mb less ram, but it's got NOS 2.2, built in keyboard, and a slew of ports (for a newton). Not bad.

the only downside is it does not come with the power adapter, so I will probibly not be able to use it right away, or use it for only a few hours. you think rat shack has them? I know it's 9 watts, but what is the voltage?

what is it about Newton that has me so excited? I don't know, but I love this feeling.

like I said, I REALLY want a 2000/2100, but this is close enough. Plus, I have a built in keyboard to boot. I also know the emate is the only newton that can read type III PCMCIA cards, of which I have none.

plus, if I want a newton like experience, I can fold the screen all the way back and use it like a tablet PC.

I have heard this thing is super slow, especailly on the interwebs. I just happen to have a wavelan gold I can use too, so i'll be the judge of that.

well, I have some bad news. I called them, and they said it was picked up by the other person just after they emailed me.

oh well, life goes on. I am now attempting to aquire another newton. Anyone have a spare one? I guess I should post in the trading post area, watch eBay, or use LEM Swap.

i'm not entirely sure what the e-mates use, but my 120 uses a battery pack, but iirc its just four AA's in heat-shrink so you should just be able to use rechargeable AA's as long as they are the same type (NiCad or what have you) as the packs.

oh, and 2100's are awesome :D i love mine.

 
You can just use standard AA batteries in them; however I put some in mine and they ran down in no time at all. There is a Newton mains adapter which I'd like to get so that I can play with it without having to worry about the batteries as it's expensive to have to keep buying batteries for it, but I guess you'd never find the adapter either :( The machine only cost me £5 so it's not really worth spending large amounts of money to get an adapter, and I don't imagine it's easy to find on otherwise.

 
i highly doubt it will work properly with Li-Ion batteries. if the original packs and device were meant to charge and use NiCad's, then there is a high probability it will not work with Li-Ion. i had this same problem in my R/C Cars, i used NiCad sub-c cells forever, and when i got some of the newer NiMH (at the time), my charger would not charge them properly, so i ended up having to buy a newer (and much MUCH better) charger. i'm not entirely sure about Li-Ion, but i would imagine the same rules apply.

 
NiMH Cells seem like the more probable option then. Afaik, you can buy batteries with a charger that work in just about anything, but I think these are NiMH cells.

 
Whatever you do, don't use a non-Newton AC adapter with a 2000/2100/eMate. You will be asking for a HUGE problem.

Your best bet is to use NiMH AA batteries in the AA battery tray if you don't have the battery pack for the 2000/2100. Charge them in an external charger. I can't remember if the lithium AA caused any problems other than the expense :)

 
If you use a non-Newton adapter, you run an extremely high risk of frying your little green friend. There have been a lot of horror stories over the years of new-to-the-Newton users buying third party adapters and having problems.
