. . . turns out to be a possible GEM!!!!!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/380418218038 and the pics below for when they go away on eBay!

I love this eBay seller, the one problem I had, they substituted a better PB for the one specc'd in the auction, which wasn't the the one I received. Good gang there, it's nice to be able to say nice things about reputable sellers. YMMV :o)

. . . never judge a POS by its brutalized, brittle outer shell . . .

. . . it may turn out to have a heart of gold . . . or fools gold . . . :?:

Not surprising, but a tad disappointing . . . DOA . . . fixed that, 6100 noob boob on my part! :I

. . . but there's a Fan/HeatSink under that thar MemMaxed HPV/Adapter combo! [;)] ]'>

Rattling around annoyingly inside the horribly disfigured box was the matching, clip-on, rotary switchable, ClockChipper! [:D] ]'>

< pics of said bonus goodies to follow >

If there were just one feet, to complete the set, for the FrankenTurd6100 Project™ this may turn out to have been PERFECTION in a Pool of MooPoo! :approve:

Very cool finds in a very ugly and beat up 6100. I've had the rear case tabs break off, but I haven't gotten one THAT ugly yet. Looks like it got thrown out the window of a moving car at someone that somebody didn't like.

Maybe it did.

I wish I could say I had matching feet to offer, but I don't think I do. I'll look when I make my trip.

Indubitably, luckily it hit them someplace soft and THEN hit the pavement!

p.s. forgot to mention the pair of 32MB SIMMS! [:D] ]'>

Just as I was! [;)] ]'>

I don't think I'll be needing any feets for the FrankenTurd6100, one of the galvanized steel shelves I made for my TelCo Rack (came w/two steel ones for $15 from my metal re-cycler up in the BX section of the BA) is for a slide-out KBD.

I'll nip the return edges, filing might even do it, it's just that nice a fit. A pair of overlong full extension drawer slides will give me access to the back panel from above.

I'll mount a KBD to the top and fab a nice slide out rodent tray underneath that . . .

I've pried all the rest of the remaining plastics off this thing and I must say, the 6100 looks pretty darn sharp in just its birthday togs. I found the other "beauty queen" that decided it wasn't going to work any longer. Between the two of them, maybe I can assemble some of this assortment of parts into a bootable kluge. [}:)] ]'>

I have a 6100 and I never found it a very stable machine...seems to run a bit hot, even with fresh paste and a 486 CPU fan attached...

I am thinking mine cooked itself to death in a past life.

Also, those plastics are the world famous Mr. Spindler's Fantastic Shatter Plastic. Wonderful stuff that self-destructs with age. :p

Even in piles of crap you will find at least a few good things. I normally euthanize CrapMacs though, its for their own good. Their parts go to their stronger brethren.

I guess this is just one of those things where I have to smile and nod. By some objective standard there's nothing that wrong with the 6100, in the sense there's nothing "that wrong" with a Hyundai Excel; both worked well enough to get you from one place to another at about the legal speed limit when they were new, and I suppose I might pay $10 for a completely smashed Hyundai if I had some crazy idea about powering a parade float or something with it. Since I can't at all visualize what you're trying to do with smashed 6100 guts I'll assume it's going to power the computer equivalent and congratulate you on the find.

(Maybe you should post some diagrams or something to help describe your hacks? I get lost so easily.)

 Yup! That's why I decided to call it the FrankenTurd6100™ 'mit G3/HPV/NuBus no less!

It's another hack in my lamed I/0 MehMac jailbreaking experiment series. }:)

Maybe you should post some diagrams or something to help describe your hacks? I get lost so easily.
Yeah, Bunsen said the same thing about my descriptions and he's been used to my ramblings in PM for a LOT of years. :-/

I finally got Illustrator up and running on the QS'02 and the PDQ, so I'll start with the 3D diagrams again, like I did back in the day for the BrickOven™

Speaking of which . . . I'm finally getting up the nerve to begin removing the various HDDs from my much missed DOA DA for installation in the QS'O2 . . . :'(

. . . even after I fix the Graphite Gift, I probably won't be able to use the single 466GHz G4 after using the Dual 1GHZ QS'02 . . .

. . . hopefully I can look forward to eviscerating the Quicksilver to install the goodies in a Dual 1.25 GHz MDD FW400! [:)] ]'>

Good deal I love it. If it still has a harddrive would you mind uploading the crescendo driver for the G3 in this one. I have troubles locating a working one

I feel like a real dope, but at least I got some nice goodies AND the brain-jolt needed to finally figure out how to complete the slide-out KBD for, as well as a picture frame server for the 32" 720pTV into, my TelCo Rack out of this.

I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THE FLIPPIN' POWER BUTTON on the original 6100 that I thought had flaked out, I was trying to start it up with the KBD button . . . :I

. . . and now I have TWO MehMac 6100s to mangle!

Me likes backups for MoBoModificationMayhem! :approve:

FrankenTurd6100™ 'mit G3/HPV/NuBus concept pics are up!

Here's a shot of the KBD Drawer/Shelf I never completed:

telcokbddrawer2p.jpg.db9bd0be825bb68591d1e63c155e178b.jpg

IIRC both of the bracket pairs were fabbed from 20ga galvanized sheet metal.

Note the Homebrew shelf above it, whose twin brother mounted at the top. They're "identical" cousins of the twin gray steel shelves that were mounted to my $15 TelCo Rack from the recycler. The TV shelf and the KBD Drawer/shelf were both fabbed from 18ga stock and are mounted backwards to better protect the TV.

This pic shows the serendipitous sizing of the 6100's birthday suit and the KBD Drawer. The support return might, or might not, be the correct size, the KBD Drawer's sides were a tad overbent and the returns are a nominal 1/2" on a carcass that's a bit under 17" wide. The 6100's sheet metal is almost EXACTLY that same tad under 16" wide. Add a pair of 1/2" wide drawer slides and it'll very likely work out just fine!

frankenturd6100002p.jpg.fc67b1846d073473babcd2bd82974edc.jpg

The slides will be mounted as high as possible on the 6100's shell and flush with the top of the return flanges at the bottom of the KBD Drawer Carcass. Height of slide depending, there should be plenty of room for the KBD assy. in betwixt 6100 and return flange at the top of the KBD Drawer's Face. Luckily I was using 18ga. stock, so I didn't hem the edges of the return flanges. Otherwise I couldn't file/fit the side and top support/stiffener return flanges

This shot shows the spare room at the back of the carcass, with full extension drawer slides sized to match, there might be enough room to service the backplane from above with the drawer fully extended. I'll test it out and just add a longer pair of slides if I want more access room for my grubby little paws.

The PDS will be flipped to the bottom side of the MoBo, in the same config I'm implementing for the SuperIIsi™ in order to make room for the NuBus Adapter topside. The G3 Card, ribbon cable extension and HPV Card will be splayed across the bottom of the MoBo. Th NuBus Adapter will likely have my PAS 16, to egg Bunsen on in his NuBus Audio Workstation Quest.

Everything boils down to the I/O_LamedMehMac jailbreaking project. So we'll see what transpires . . . :-/

edit: I'll definitely be moving the face of the CD back so it's flush with the HDD and FDD RFI sheet metal. The blank for the non-CD equipped FuglyMac6100 will cover the front bezel of the CD in keeping with the Junkyard Hacks design language detailing.

Are we on the same page yet, EudiG? :?:

Are we on the same page yet, EudiG? :?:
Okay, I get it. That's quite the fab job. I guess I'm still a little puzzled what you'll use the thing *for* if all your insidious plans come to fruition but I suppose when it comes to things like this the journey is more important than the destination. Carry on!

(I've had a bad record with case hacks or "take it to the max!" projects myself. I'll get an idea, like the when I did an ATX power supply conversion on a Bondi iMac motherboard, to do "something interesting" with but I'll end up losing enthusiasm when I realize that no matter how cool a case I might stuff it in a Bondi motherboard is still a Bondi motherboard. The classic "Sow's Ear" problem. Most recently I ran into that issue after lovingly restoring a super-sexy Dolch lunchbox, crazily maxing it out with a selection of *classic* peripherals and gonzo ad-ons like USB 2.0 and wireless. It was fun while it lasted, but in the end I had a 200mhz Pentium with 128MB of RAM in a pretty box. Totally perfect for running all those old things that... for the most part work just fine on newer machines anyway. Whee. Ended up giving it to a guy that needed a DOS box to run an old EPROM burner.)

Thanks, EudiG! My biggest problem is following through to completion, once the proof of concept stage meets my stringent requirements.

IOW, only the really utilitarian of hacks get completed before it's time for me to move on to more challenging fare.

Probably a vacuum forming rig should be my next utilitarian project, that'll get several stalled hacks back on track. I've found an old softball teammate from my church team who restores antique cars, so he's going to be sandblasting the plexi rear-projection screen for the MacintoshClassicIIIColorTVp™ Hack, which I've really been wanting to finish up.

The optical bench experimentation to dial that puppy in is gonna' be a blast! :approve:

edit: I like to have a slide show going on along with "NatureScapes" kinda white noise generation CDs. For me, music is usually for rockin' it on road trips, but I've got some good tunes in the 100 CD Changer set on Random. During the winters I've been using the QS'02 as the slide-show server, but the three weeks of spring we get are just about sprung down here in the Bermuda Triangle. Normally I'd go for a Takkified SlideServer . . .

. . . but the KBD Tray right under the 32" 720p LCD angle has FrankenTurd6100™ written all over it! [}:)] ]'>

SWEET! I just got a GREAT deal on a pair of 18" full extension drawer slides!

I checked the KBD Drawer Carcass and it did turn out to be over-bent by just about the same amount I thought I needed to shave off the width of the bottom return flanges for a perfect fit! The drawer slides are just wide enough that I don't need any extra clearance. All I have to do is to fab a couple of mini-lolly columns to take care of squaring up (bending out) the sides of the carcass and all the parts will fit together like they have eye-balls! [:)] ]'>

. . . or I could clamp the carcass to the steel frame border under the staircase outside and just whale away at the flanges with a rubber mallet . . . }:)

. . . that'll probably be the first effort!

KISS(tupid) So much for needing to make any special tools or pounding the snot outta' the ovevbent edges with a rubber Mallet.

2 pieces of wood to spread the force + scissor jack from car = easy peasy, nice-n-easy. ::)

I'll be adding light gage flat stock aluminum to the insides of the sides of the 6100's sheet metal for mounting the slides at any given height. The top front edge will be a custom wood wrist rest and the bottom edge will probably be receiving a piece of (well rouded side edges) angle stock as a the drawer pull.

It's on to designing the KBD/wrist rest/mouse pad drawer so I can assemble this thing, get it working in baseline config and out of the way!

But easily removable! [}:)] ]'>

edit: for the comrade who wanted to see how I'd rackmount a 6100 . . .

1) use wider mounting brackets

2) drill four holes in each side of 6100 in appropriate spots, starting with a small pilot bit . . .

tbc . . .

< abrupt change of gears >

Belay that last, that'd the cleanest looking approach to a rackmount 6100, but it'd be a friggin' nightmare to service.

Buy a length of track for 2 x 4 (nominal size) metal framing studs, they usually come ten feet long.

You can use tin snips (only buy really good ones) to rough cut to length in the parking lot.

you'll need some kind of aluminum angle to tie the front together and cover the cut edges.

Fab your side pieces, brackets, center and rear cross members from the metal stud track.

Use hex head, drill point, self tapping sheet metal screws in all the right places for fitting/prototyping.

Drill each undersized screw hole out one or two at a time and replace with short bolts, washers & nylon insert lock nuts for final assembly.

This way the feets sit on nice wide side strips, the bottom has free airflow and you can pull the stock (no holes on the sides) MehMac6100 out of the custom shelf for service. :approve:
