I have a highly upgraded 9600 that has a pioneer DVD burner on an ata/66 card. It has no trouble seeing DVDs but I'd sort of like it to play them. Anyone done this?

DVD on a pre G3 Mac

I should have described the 9600 and what I've tried so far but I had 3 kids climbing on me as I typed. The 9600 has a 400mhz G3 card, 1.12gb RAM, ata/133 card, Rage 128 card with DVD decoder. I've also tried an Mac Radeon 9200 video card. When I try to boot the Apple DVD player v1.3 it displays a message Hardware not found.
The DVD drive was original equipment on a G4 Mac.
What comes to mind is that VLC has a DVD decoder built-in. I have played DVDs on machines without them using VLC. You would probably need 10.3 on it and find a compatible version for 10.3. I don't know if that OS can be put on with xpostfacto or not. Sounds like a mission. That should work..

I tried the patch and followed the sites instructions for DVD player 2.7 which no longer says my computer doesn't support the DVD player. It instead gave a message "Apple DVD player can not find software it needs".
So I thought that since the OS on this HD is one that the original owner installed and may have modified that I'd do a clean install on another HD and see if I got different results. Which I did. Now when trying to boot DVD player 2.7 I get a message "The Apple DVD Player can not open because the Apple CD/DVD extension is not installed" Unfortunately it is but I tried booting an OS9.2.2 machine and copying it's extension. Still no luck.

If you're trying to use the Apple CD/DVD extension with a DVD-RW drive, I do not think that works. At least, I'm pretty sure that on my Umax S900 (very similar to 9600) the Apple extension does not operate the DVD-RW drive.
If the DVD player software you're using will work with other extensions, then try the extension from Toast which allows reading disks in an RW drive.

Maybe if I have time this weekend, I'll either try a DVD drive with an ide/SCSI adapter. Or try all this on a 8500 or 7600 in case it's a hardware problem

I ran into issues on my cube (stock Rage 128 and Radeon 7500) when trying to play DVDs after having installed OS 9 using the OS 9.1 disk (kept telling me that the hardware could not be found, which is weird knowing that it is an Apple-branded super drive and that it's working great in OS X 10.4). After reinstalling the OS using my OS 9.2.1 disk, the Apple DVD player software apparenly "registered the hardware" and DVDs play just fine. I'm not sure if it's related to the version of the Apple DVD software, DVD/video driver but using the 9.2.1 install did the trick for me. Not sure if it helps but I figured I'd at least throw my two cents out there
