Duo 230, 250, and Dock with shutdown-on-boot

My friend Tom gave me a Duo 230, a Duo 250, a Duo Dock, and an Apple Portrait Display! We spent some time playing around with the Duos, but ran into a strange problem we couldn't figure out. When inserted into the Dock, both Duos will turn off mid-way through booting, after the "Welcome to Macintosh" message appears. xx(

If you try booting with extensions off, the Duo 250 will boot successfully and runs normally, but the Duo 230 still shuts down after Welcome to Macintosh appears.

Our first thought was that this could be a dead PRAM battery issue, so we removed the keyboard from both Duos, and disconnected the PRAM battery cable that's above-right of the trackball. That didn't seem to make any difference, however - the shutdown during booting still happened the same as before.

As far as we can tell, this behavior is specific to running with the Duo in the Dock. Unfortunately both Duo batteries are dead, and I don't have an AC adapter, so I don't have any way to try running them outside the Dock.

The hard drive built into the Dock is dead, so we disconnected it. Could that have anything to do with the problem?

Could this be a software issue? The fact that 250 will boot with extensions off suggests it might be, but what kind of software problem would cause the computer to turn off halfway through booting? And why doesn't the 230 boot even with extensions off?

There are caps inside the duo, and an fpu with.video ram slot. Look for goo, reseat fpu and ram. The PSU in some of those could be an issue especially with a bad hard drive robbing power. Try unplugging the floppy also.

More details:

If I remove the main battery from the 250, it boots in the Dock! Even with extensions on. But when I reinserted the main battery and tried it again, I got the chimes of death. Then after letting it sit for a minute, it went back to the old behavior of shutting down midway through booting.

If I remove the main battery from the 230, it also boots in the Dock!

So it seems like these batteries are so dead that they somehow prevent the Duos from booting normally, even when they're being powered by the Dock. Weird.

I wonder if it's possible to rebuild a Duo battery?

It doesn't seem to the the Dock "tick of death" that I've read about. There's no FPU or VRAM installed in the Dock logic board. I had no idea the internals of a Dock were so complicated - it's practically an entire second computer!

The "tick of death" is a single capacitor, IIRC. Heck, even I fixed those things back in the day. Everything went to hell and gone when the started doing that evil surface mount crap! What's wrong with your iPhone being the size of a smart car? Thru-Hole technology rocks . . .

. . . as in the Neolithic. :o)

Yep, there's threads upon threads about re-celling batteries for the cute lil' buggers. The Kindle was the first screen I ever saw that was better in sunlight than the Duo250's LCD.

Both battery packs measured about 1.4V, yikes! I was able to revive one of the two batteries - a Type I - by rigging up my RC airplane charger and doing a constant current charge at 400mA. This involved some bare wires propped up against the battery's terminals with a heavy book. :) I put about 200 mAh into the battery, after which its voltage had risen to about 14.5V. The battery was then recognized in the Duo when I had it in the dock, so that charged it some more until it said it was full. The "full" battery only powered the Duo 230 for about 15 minutes, but at least it worked.

I'm trying the same trick on the second battery - a Type III - but so far not as much success. I put 250 mAh into the battery, which took its voltage up to about 11V. But when I put the battery into the Duo in the dock, it showed the icon of a battery with an X. Now I'm charging it further on my RC airplane charger to see if I get a better result if I charge to a higher voltage. It's at 12.33V and climbing now...

I got the second battery charged far enough that it's recognized by the Duo 250, and it's charging further in the Dock now.

Strangely, the first battery when "fully" charged will run the Duo 230 for about 15 minutes, but the Duo 250 won't even turn on with that battery. Not even a peep out of it when I press the power button while using that battery. So I've never seen this lovely Duo 250 screen, since I've only been able to run it inside the Dock.

I'll hop off and dig up the pics of my fugly@$$ DeclROM powerleg hack so you can run the 250 in hood popped LCD mode. [}:)] ]'>
