Dually G5 1.8Ghz w/ 1GB RAM. Only $270!!!

Just out of curiosity, what are you mainly using it for? I've just won a 2.0 GHz dual G5 on eBay that will replace my 700MHz eMac for graphics (and a bit of audio/video)... I'm anticipating a noticeable difference ;-)
Even over my 933Mhz G4 w/ 1.5GB RAM it was quite noticeable.

I use it for everything I normally do with my MacBook. I ripped a 9GB DVD down to 4.7GB in a matter of 20 minutes. Not bad for how much time my G4 took. iirc, the MacBook took something like 7 minutes. So it would do great for A/V

I like the fact I can still use PCI Cards, even if I am stuck at AGP for the video. *sigh* some day I will max this out, but that time is not now...

Awesomesauce :D

Just MHO, and I am no mod here, but I reckon if Apple's abandoned support for it and shunted it off to the "Older machines" page, then it belongs here. ISTR PPC was permissible, but I could be wrong. Cory's the man with the word on these issues.

As for performance, well, it may be an old machine, but it was a high end beast at the time.

I personally second what Bunsen said - the first generation Power Mac G5s are actually now Vintage...which basically is Obsolete unless you live in California, not to mention that Snow Leopard will not support any PowerPC based systems anyway.

While I personally enjoy reading more about people liberating older (Platinum era) systems...I do think the G5's time either has come, or is about to come.

The G5's time has definitely come. Apple and Adobe are both dropping support for it and all other PowerPC systems in their next major software release.

What I'm waiting for is the price on G5s to drop, as admittedly I've wanted one literally since I first downloaded the WWDC'03 keynote and saw Jobs up on the stage talking about the stagnation of the G4, and Apple's promise to ship a 3GHz G5 by that time next year.

Although I'll probably wait until I can get mine at the price of some low end G4s or most G3s.
