Dually G5 1.8Ghz w/ 1GB RAM. Only $270!!!

Cost me $270 USD. I think it was an awesome deal. I got the guy to knock off $30. Btw, there are NO scratches on it ANYWHERE. It came out of my local college according to the guy that bought it. These are the specs:

Dual 1.8Ghz G5 CPU w/ 512KB L2 Each CPU

1GB (4x 256MB) RAM. Space for 4 more. (I think)

900Mhz FSB

DVD-RW

152GB SATA HDD

GeForce 5700GX 64MB w/ DVI

I currently have it installing OS X 10.5 and set it up with an aluminum keyboard, and hooked up to a DVI 22" Samsung LCD.

It rocks!

When you mentioned it in the chan I didn't realize it was a dual, thats awesome. IIRC the dual 1.8 is spost to be pretty reliable aswell (comparatively) .

However, the conquest boards are only for vintage Mac gear from now on. Just saying. :)

Yes! squeaked by on that last round! I am just on the verge of vintage on MacTracker, and apple has abandoned the G5. In your face!

Seriously, as much as you say this is a new machine, it's far from it. If a G4 700 eMac can be on the conquest, why not a G5 which came out within the time of that?

More and more people are posting modern things on the Conquest. I would just say, stick with macs, and PowerPC and earlier.

Take the intel macs elsewhere, but my G5 is vintage. Especially since 10.6 is almost out, and PowerPC will be left in the dust. that means my machine too.

So give it a rest. I am not criticizing you, I am just saying, other people post stuff as modern as this, and they don't get called on it.

Hey, it wasn't my decision. :-/ I was just trying to say that THE RULES might judge this as not following the conquest rules. I'm not the 68kmla deputy.

I don't want you to take this personally, but I was just posting trying to post a friendly reminder because I didn't see anything mentioned newer then G4 Macs after the rules revision, and you have to take it offensively? Geez, chillax. :-/

As per this announcement, and the Apple KB article, you're fine.

But honestly? This is the type of attitude that caused people to put their liberations of PCs and brand new mbps/thinkpads in here, and while it's nice that you just bought a thinkpad, even a newer Mac, it's not appropriate for this subforum.

Ultimately, what I think we need to remember is that this is a forum about 68k Macs, and that macrumors.com has lots of nice, huge threads where you can posts pictures of as many G4/G5/Intel Macs as you want.

Relax. I meant nothing personal. Just taking a jab at you ;)

And yeah, I knew it was vintage before I posted it. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted it. So I stayed well within guidelines :p

I didn't mean to make you think it was personal, I was just meaning a friendly jab. So no offense hopefully.

Btw, I didn't care to talk about the macbook in this topic, it's just that mars brought the topic up. So I commented.

As far as the G5, I am not sure what I totally want to do with it. I need to get my Quadra 840av out for a while, so after playing with this for a week, it may go on the shelf for a few days while I chill with my Quadra. 128MB on a Quadra, and I just got a replacement for my MYST disc, I thought it might be fun to sit down and play it on a bonafied original system that MYST shipped for.

I also have other stuff to play with, but work will most likely keep me from playing with it all. That and I have a server to rebuild. In a new case, and possibly a new drive. People on the channel know all about that ::)

 
I think we should keep the conquests to just 68K and early PPC macs and related gear. Do you realy want me to post all the offtopic stuff I grab (I could flood this forum easy)?

Ok. When you install ram in a G5, it is NOT like the old power macs. The olds ones were like this 1|2|3|4|5 1|2|3|4|5. The new PowerMac G5s go likes this 4|3|2|1| 1|2|3|4. See the difference. The olds one used to start from the left (or top) and went to the bottom (or right). The G5s go from the inside, and work it's way outside. I now have 3GB on the system, with 2 more on it's way. Granted, I will only have 4.5GB, but that's because I had to give up 2x 256 to make way for the 2x 512 I just put in. So it goes like this, 4x 512, 2x 256. two of those 256s will be taken out and replaced with 2x 1GB
I still say, even 3GB is awesome. When my new 1GB Comes in (1x 1GB DDR-400) It will be 4608MB (4.5GB) because I have to take a pair of 256's out to throw in the two 1GB

 
Oh I am! It runs pretty much anything I run at it! Oh, and It is waaaaaaaay way faster than my 933Mhz G4. I know people say it lags a bit. Well what do you expect from a machine 5-6 years old now? This was built in 2003 and it's now 2009!

To be honest, it's such a powerful machine, i really don't see much lag unless I tax it really bad. And it's very little lag. Mainly I get lag when dealing with an app that's using a lot of HDD Bandwidth and I have another machine using HDD Bandwidth. That's when it mainly lags. I am working to remedy that though by setting up a RAID (RAID-0) so I can get more bandwidth by spreading it across the SATA Busses.

I can't WAIT to get that new memory!

Then again, it's only 1.5GB More ram. But man, that would be sweet!

I meant to say when It gets very little lag when even it gets taxed heavily. A lot of times, I will have a web browser open with up to 25 tabs open, then iTunes, as well as IRC, IM, FTP (for uploading) Copying large files, and a bunch of other stuff

I will be using Disk Utility's SoftRAID Function. That way I get enhanced throughput. I decided to throw the 1TB Drive I fixed into an external enclosure. That way it's portable and I can backup the server. Also, I know it will boot, and I have the files already backed up in real time, it won't be an issue if I do a RAID-0 even if I have a catastrophical crash that is unrecoverable (which is normal when a RAID-0 goes down)

 
Just out of curiosity, what are you mainly using it for? I've just won a 2.0 GHz dual G5 on eBay that will replace my 700MHz eMac for graphics (and a bit of audio/video)... I'm anticipating a noticeable difference ;-)

 
Very cool. :) We are still using our dual 1.8 as our main desktop. Birth of our first child (and desire to use iPhoto) prompted the purchase. Still does pretty much everything we need it to. Now that Snow Leopard is driving the nails in the coffin though (because you know that more apps will be release Intel-only instead of Universal) I'm thinking I'd better start thinking about upgrading, maybe next year.
