Drexel University "Cattle Branded" Original Macintosh

So amazed this Drexel University “Cattle branded” Original Macintosh is now part of my collection! I’ve been looking for a 128k for the past three years, a couple got away, but I think this one was meant to be (one of my best friends ran the Drexel University MUG in the late 90's, I hung out with the group a few times).

Last Saturday morning I opened my email to a Craigslist’s alert with a few poorly framed pictures of a running “? Disk” 128k, box, disk set, and mouse with box. The description was a bit inaccurate regarding dates, but price was fantastic, so I reached out.

After speaking with the seller, I learned he was a Drexel freshman in 1982 and this was the computer he used in college. He now lives abroad and was only in town for the weekend cleaning out a house. He just wanted to sell it quickly and not throw it away. We made a deal and for a few extra bucks he delivered it to my sister’s nearby place of work to save me over two hours driving. I’d have to wait a week until Easter but what a score. But wait…there was more!

On Easter I finally opened the box and was absolutely floored there was a Drexel logo on the front, but not the usual Blue D I’ve seen before. The seller never mentioned this nor was this part of the computer pictured. After finding some great info from @unity this branding was done by the University to mark machines owned by the school and used in labs, by professors, staff etc.

I’m not sure how the seller came to acquire a University machine, perhaps they sold some 128k’s to students and replaced with 512k’s?

This one was the 414th machine manufactured during the 30th week (July 23th to 29th) of 1984 at the Freemont, CA facility.

I haven’t turned on yet, want to clean it up first and see what things look like inside. Very curious if the 400k drive works!

I’ll post more updates but if anyone is coming to VFC East or the May Swap meet I’m looking for a working M0110 original keyboard and cable😉

Nice haul, it's a thing of beauty!

I snagged one at a flea market just to find out what the heck was inside. That was so far back in the Snitz day that nobody here knew what that "D" meant at the time. Later research brought the story to light.

Thankfully, the one I went back to get wasn't (what I'd always considered useless) a 128K board! Someone had used it, loved it and upgraded it to Macintosh Plus level. Not only that, they'd Killy Klipped what kicked off my crazy Performer Plus-SE-Classic cloning project. After fiddling with it here, off it went to @Bolle and now there are several versions!

Interesting that your branding looks charred, Mac plastics usually don't do that? Is that dirt or maybe someone took a magic marker to it? My branded "D" is clean, not nearly as stand-out as yours.
