Decided to try my hand at recapping. Guidence needed!

For SMD components, I think so.  You just blast the area around the cap (careful not to hold the heat in any one spot too long) and then pick it up with tweezers.


It's also very good for heatshrink, removing glue on PCBs, heating up general areas of a PCB to make soldering/removing components easier, etc.

 
Just wanted to update this. I've now got three successful recaps under my belt and they all went well. I highly recommend giving it a shot if you're thinking about doing it. It's a slight pain in the ass, but well worth it and hardly impossible to do.

You don't need a fancy soldering iron.  A cheap pencil iron will work just fine.   :)

Also, technically, you could use an oven & solder paste.
