Custom rainbow SCSI cables; only a few bucks.

A while ago at my local parts store I found some rainbow ribbon SCSI cables. I thought they were just too cool. Most ribbon cables are that dull gray. Looks awesome in my computers, especially my vintage Macs.

Did some Googling, and found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/160566742550

Coupled with some 2x25 50 pin headers, you could make your own custom length rainbow SCSI cables. I thought that you'd need a special crimper, but according to a video I watched, all you need is a vice clamp. Looked really easy.

I always hoped someone would sell these in 40 and 50 pin configurations. I love those rainbow cables and sadly I only see them on USB + Audio headers :O

A bench vice works great for crimping IDC connectors, just make sure you get the cap lined up correctly before you crank it down. Some aluminum soft jaws or blocks of wood are handy to keep the vice from marring the connectors. If you're putting one on the end of the cable, crimp it with a bit of extra wire sticking out the other side, then slice it clean with a razor knife. Also make sure the connectors are all facing the right way around, it's difficult to remove one without breaking the clips.

Tadaaaa! :D

I just made these for my IIci. I'm gonna give it a go when I get home. The connectors I bought have strain reliefs which look pretty nifty and make it easier to grab ahold of the cable. I used a paper cutter to get an even, straight edge, then used a vice with 2 blocks of wood to crimp the cable. Looks indistinguishable from the store bought cables... except for the super cool rainbow wires. 8-)

Cables worked! Well, the 3 connector cable was put together wrong. I put the second connector at the wrong end of the cable. :p I'll make a new one when I get to work tomorrow. :)
