Connectix Quickcam B/W Recap?

First, the original serial black and white quickcam was a futuristic device back in the day using it with CuSeeMe and video chatting with folks around the world. Getting one of these at college on my OG 6100 was pretty mind blowing even at 1-2 frames a second.

I picked up a reasonably priced item on eBay ($20 untested) a while back and finally got a PPC 6136 CD to do some testing on.

The good news is the cam works, powers up and responds to the software. The bad news is that picture quality looks like it's suffering from what I assume is significant leakage messing with the sensor or filter in the cam. You can see my ghostly image below. My question, is it worth cracking this thing open and dealing with the many microscopic caps (see this post)? Not sure if I'm up for it but might try it.

that picture output is characteristic of a pickled infrared filter

fortunately you can remove it and adjust the lens a bit to get things to look fine.

i haven't tried replacing the filter yet, but i've seen some that might work on aliexpress and such.

tl;dr, crack that sucker open, remove the caps, clean the crud, and slap new caps in.
