Color Classic degaussing coil dead?

So I have a Color Classic with dark blotches on the display, and if the degaussing coil is working, it's not doing anything. What did make a difference was placing a couple of small magnets at the top left and bottom right corners of the screen, right on the CRT mounts. That cleared the screen up beautifully, but it returns to blotch when I remove them.

I've ruled out the analog board (posistor etc) by swapping from a known working machine. Do these coils go bad? Could the display itself be bad, loose aperture grille or something?
