Capacitor Recommendations for SE/30

There is a specific cap on the IIfx that fails, but Quadra 700s, Quadra 900s, Quadra 950s, Quadra 650s, Quadra 800s and some IIfxs have been using 16V tantalum capacitors on 12V parts of the circuit for 30 years from factory, and they're not famed for being unreliable - quite the reverse. I'm not overly convinced that there is that much of an issue.

Here is a photo of a Quadra 700. If you look around the board, it is covered in 6V rated capacitors. This, mainly 5V board, has 1V of head room.

Had a chat with a friend and they basically said with tants, more is better. If you're buying tants, get 25V for 12V rails.

But using 16V tants on 12v used to be common practice and so it shouldn't be any worse if you have 16V parts already.

Well, out of the 30 plus boards i have done now with tantalum caps from reputable sources i have had no issues with 47uf 16v. In the beginning when i was first learning to solder, i had a few shorted ones and one popped, but that was last june / july.

Seems like blue painters masking tape (i dont have kapton tape) might be effective to protect nearby traces and components while recapping? I just tested it on a scrap board and the adhesive is very mild and its suprisingly heat resistant. Could help from getting any solder where I dont want it.

After cleaning the pads, I'll tin the cap leads and hit the points with the soldering iron just enough to melt. Hopefully needing no additional solder.
