I have a PowerBook 150 and am cleaning out the corrosion rust resulting from a leaking battery, and I am wondering if the metal shield is required for the machine to function.
If by the metal RF shield that holds in the battery, hard disk, under the motherboard, no it's not essential, but it does hold things in place so you probably want to salvage it. Grind off the corrosion then spray with rust killing paint if you aren't too concerned with aesthetics.
