Bootable 50pin SCSI CDRW Drive

If you are still having issues with this, the following may help:

At issue is the fact that the Yamaha drive isn't Apple ROM'ed, so it's easy to say it isn't bootable (as Yamaha support used to do without much thought), BUT ... it is bootable with the longer SCSI ID startup prompt (command/option/shift/delete/SCSI ID#), and if you install Apple CD-ROM 5.3.1 (from System 7.6) in place of your OS's standard CD/DVD driver/extension, it will work just fine as your primary/only CD drive. Just keep the Toast extension in another set for when you want to burn.

Huh, well I just learned something. I never knew you could specify the device like that on boot. That's very handy to know, although I now have two scsi burners that allow boot another machine I bought randomly had one and it also allows me to boot from it although it's generic and unbranded so I've no idea any details about it. But the yamaha ones will probably find there way to another owner someone who has more optical drive bays perhaps.

I have this very same question! I'm really hoping it does I plan to find out today, I'm waiting for a special part to arrive though which should arrive today if Fedex would ever hurry up and get here!

Sad news it does not line up with the eject button it appears it’s hitting right in the middle between the two buttons. Considering rigging up some kind of way to make it work though. I really like this drive so far.

Some more sad news on the plextor front, but only does the eject button not line up the drive itself has the tray offset enough that the tray will not even open…. This really stinks the drive is quite nice. I imagine it will have this problem on most machines though kinda wondering how others have used this drive? I’m about ready to try and fabricate my own mount but ugh.

In somewhat related news my package finally did come that I alluded to earlier and it was my Zip drive bezel!!! We’ll I don’t know if it’s really a Zip drive bezel but I got it all installed and then sad times….

It also did not line up…. If anyone has a picture or knows what kind of bracket is needed to raise this up I’d love to hear about it. In the meantime I’ve done some wonky McGyver work to get it just about right.



Go ahead just take a few moments to feast your eyes on that and just soak it in. Yes that’s bezel sandwhich, two regular bezels for the bread with a nice meaty metal g4/g3 bracket for the inside.

Late contribution but the Matsushita CW-7502-B CD-R drive (8x read/4x write) works in my Macs. Holding down "C" doesn't work but Command-Option-Shift-Delete does.

The tray button locations match those on regular CD drives Apple was using from Matsushita at the time.

Ah!! Turns out that the generic looking one that came in the machine I bought appears to be that very drive.

Although I appear to have done something now that is making it not want to detect either of these drives at all to boot from or just even to show me a CD on the desktop. Wondering if I have a scsi conflict with the added zip drive and changing the hardrive. I may need to move all this into a project thread. I've started going off topic.

Well that one arrived in a machine that I bought later and I didn't know it was even in there it was just a bonus. I haven't dug into the scsi stuff super deep just yet. I'm confident both drives work I booted off of them I just have to get everything to play nice together.

I believe the bezel you're using for a zip drive was originally intended for a tape drive.

Thanks! I fiddled with it a bit more bringing the drive out more into the bezel and I think it looks really good. The bezel is the exact dimension of the Zip drive and for me at least waaaaaay more functional than a tape drive would be.
