I made a virtual machine using SheepSaver and installed Mac OS 8.6 (Sawtooth AGP version). I will restore the virtual disk to a CF card and put that into a PowerBook 3400c. In theory it should work. Has anyone done the same and verified that it works on the same or similar machine?

My go-to for OS installation on these is a CF card in the PCMCIA slot. You can literally just copy the contents of the 8.6 installer to the CF card and then boot it off PCMCIA (fully automatic), then install to your hard drive.

Depends on whether the Sawtooth image you used will boot on other computers. Why not just use a standard 8.6 disc image?
I figured I should just use the PowerBook 3400 7.6 restore CD. I have burned it to a CF card but the PCMCIA card reader keeps getting ejected. Do I need a working PRAM battery to boot from a CF card? I tried pressing cmd + opt + shift + del at boot but it doesn't work.
