Best OS for iBook

Hey I am looking into a better OS for my iBook to use. But I need compatibility, OS X works but its such a memory hog for my wee iBook. I do need something that works as well as GarageBand does as far as recording and editing the audio goes. I also need something that can read Office documents(mainly PowerPoint and Word, and ProPresenter friendly, but I am dreaming now). But I really do need the OS to be able to use my Behringher UCA 200. Thanks folks. :beige:

OSX - you need that 512mb card...

Maybe linux? Support for PPC macs IMO is pretty spotty depending on the distro

Or you could get Ubuntu and use Ardour and Open Office, I suppose, but it's always felt a bit wobbly to me. And I'm not particularly impressed with GNOME... I mean, it would be nice to get something better after an OS migration... for once!

Well, try it, see if you like it. There are only so many options for a Mac laptop... OS X, OS 9, Ubuntu.. You can turn straight Ubuntu into Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu if you know what you're doing. The latter two would be the 'lighter' options, though.

You could also use Xubuntu instead of either of the other two. XFCE is lighter than either KDE or GNOME.

I recommend downloading the Alternate Installation Disc. It has more options than the Live disc (which is the standard install) and uses the text-based Debian-installer. Don't be intimidated by Debian-installer, though....it's very much like installing Windows XP. If you've done that, then Debian-installer won't be difficult.
