I considered this when we first started the Wiki. Unfortunately MediaWiki doesn't support the same range of characters in usernames as phpBB. Hence any users that had characters in their phpBB usernames that were unsupported wouldn't be able to log in to the Wiki. Without mass renaming people on the forums – which would disrupt people's forum access – I can't see a way to use it.
