AppleDesign Speakers II & AppleCD 300e Plus - $20

This was an amazing eBay score: AppleDesign Speakers II & AppleCD 300e Plus for $20.50.

They look great with my Mac Classic.

The fronts of the speakers are a little yellow. You can definitely see the difference next to my Mac Classic. I'll give them a retrobrite dip this weekend.

The backs and bottoms are pretty good. The CDROM is in great shape too. Just needs a little cleaning.

What's great is that it came with all the original cables as well as the original power supply. All in perfect working order. Still sounds pretty good too!

Can't wait to clean them up!

Those speakers should clean up fine with a quick dip.

The AppleDesign Speakers II are a favorite of mine. I got mine used at the good-will for $6 about 6 or so years ago. The left speaker (the one placed on the right of the Classic,) has a cord issue but other than that they work great. It'd be nice to have a spot to permanently setup my Classic II. Ah well, that will come when I finally move into a bigger bed room.

I just read that the AppleCD was $500! Is that true? Anyone know how much were the speakers were? This didn't come as a set right?

I think I remember my Dad paying somewhere around $700ish for our AppleCD 300 (caddy loading) in December 1993...at the time CD-ROM was the new, new, new thing, and they were certainly not cheap.

For what its worth, in 1994 Apple did actually do a "Multimedia Kit" where you got a caddy loading AppleCD 300 and a pair of the original AppleDesign Powered Speakers. They might have done a similar thing with the CD 300e and ADPS II, I don't know.

Time for some retrobrite dipping action!

I left them in the peroxide/oxy for a few hours. It was a nice sunny day, so it didn't take long for them to clear right up.

I let them dry for a few hours and then reassembled them.

I think they look great. And I was right, they look awesome next to my Classic!

Yeah, somebody was selling the black ones a few weeks ago, they gave me a shipping quote and everything, but never followed up with how to actually send payment! I *REALLY* wanted them for my PowerCD. (Still missing the remote for it, though.)

May I ask what solution you used for your Retr0Bright? I didn't want to make the gel/paste because as far as I can tell, almost everyone gets streaking due to uneven application. I'd like to just submerge mine.

You have quite a big bucket there, but did you really buy that much hydrogen peroxide? What percentage?

I went to the local salon supply store and picked up a gallon jug of Volume 20 Clear Developer for $6. I filled the bucket with hot water to dissolve the Oxy. As far as the Oxy goes, I didn't really measure it out. I just sprinkled it over the top, 3 passes the length of the bucket. I then poured in about a quarter gallon of the peroxide.

If you saw my writeup on the 128K Mac, I filled that huge rubbermaid tote up with hot water and poured in a half gallon of peroxide. Same with the Oxy, 3 passes back and forth over the top.

What is "oxy" and will any "hydrogen peroxide" hair bleach do?

Merlin's Original Recipe
The original magical "Retr0bright" gel mixture that was found to work is:-

1 pint (500ml) Hydrogen Peroxide, 10 to 15% strength (40 vol) (available from hairdressers' supplies, e.g. the 'Sally Beauty' franchise in the UK)

2 heaped tablespoonfuls of Xanthan Gum (available from health food shops or online)

1 level teaspoonful of Glycerine (available from pharmacies)

1/4 teaspoonful of "Oxy" laundry booster
