AppleDesign Powered Speakers question - What's this port?

I have 2 sets plus 1 extra speaker. The other two don't have this port. One of them does. What's it for? Just additional speakers?

Subwoofer, eh?

I think I might mod my extra speaker and stick a subwoofer in there. Make a matching set of AppleDesign Speakers + Subwoofer. :)
