Apple Network Server 500

https://www.ricardo.ch/kaufen/computer-und-netzwerk/apple/sonstige-apple-mac-s/apple-network-server-500/v/an763179986/

It was going to happen sooner or later. Temptation.

There is an Apple Network Server 500 that I could get and one that I wouldn't have to ship (1). I don't have room for it and it would push my wife over the limit. The hobbies of other people are not always appreciated. (You already have 20 old macs - some of which work - and this isn't even a mac! What are you going to do with it? It's not coming upstairs). And it's going for CHF300.- (about USD320), which is way above my limit usually. I won't come across one of these again.

Am I mad to let it go?

(1) Do these things fit in cars or would I need a van?

It could be difficult to sell as well, considering shipping costs are going up all the time. Not telling you to NOT get it, but it's probably good to think about the End Game.

:)

I get the same complaints for herself as well - I have to sneak new machines up the stairs when she is not looking.

Picked up an IBM400 server last month - guy was giving it away and it looked like a large desktop in the picture. he was kind enough to bring it to my house.

That's when I saw the true size of it.........It took 2 of us to carry it.....a massive machine.

-

you should of seen her face when we carried it into the kitchen!

-

get it, learn from it, you never know what you might learn.

-

every new machine is more knowledge

-

just make sure you have the 'milk tray' and flowers in the other hand when you walk in with it!

At the height of of some of the tallest PC Towers and 3.5X as wide, that is not going to it inside a car. It's not going to fit into a minivan without removing a row of seats! Those things were HUGE! I believe they ran on a choice of UNIX, A/UX and Mac OS. But it as a PowerPC Processor at less then 150MHz. Top of the line back then. The one the school district has they kept in a air conditioned storage room as they had no place to put it, so they ran the network wires to the Storage Room!

I was one of the few that was allowed to touch it. I only looked at it once and decided that it is best that I did the work to it remotely.

And don't you dare think of bending over to pick it up! You will herniate yourself if you are try it! It is best you put it in the middle of the living room and put a large flat piece of varnished wood on top of it, and call it a coffee table so your wife wont get mad at you.

Edit: My mistake - it wont run A/UX or Mac OS. It will run AIX - from IBM.

I fit one in my trunk back when.   It's largish, but it's not gigantic.

You can get one in a car - in a hatchback or wagon for sure, but probably in the back or front seat of a sedan.

Easy lift for two people, not for one.

I fitted a ANS500 in the back seat of a Toyota Corolla - it's not that huge.  Take a trolley when you go to get it to move it around - it has wheels but one side is fixed so maneuverability is poor.

I carried mine up the stairs by myself and it wasn't really that big of an issue. I've got long arms but it wasn't un-doable.

I really would love to get my ANS running. I also need a lock for it so it can put it all back together.
