Apple IIGS fatal error 0681

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this error. Ive isolated the problem to the memory expansion card inside my IIGS. My IIGS is ROM 1 and won't boot with this card present as it gives this error. I had a look on the web but no-one explains how to fix the issue. I feel from what Ive read online buying a new card wouldn't work.

Are you able to activate the IIgs' ROM self-test with Open-Apple+Option with the RAM card present? I gather the built-in test isn't very comprehensive when it comes to the memory card but it might be able to catch a gross error.

Is the card fully populated, or does it have open sockets? It's *possible* you could be getting the error if the jumper blocks on the card are incorrect.

The card is fully populated (1MB) and has worked great until today. The internal self test doesn't look at the card as the IIGS is a ROM 1. It comes back saying that the system is good. I have additional diagnostic software that says the card is faulty but it doesn't give any error codes. Another thing to note is that when the control and reset keys are pressed the system comes up with 'Cannot reset $0602' whereas this doesn't occur when the card isn't installed.

So you're able to boot this diagnostic software, so the system does "boot"? (Just not into GS/OS, or Prodos as well?)

I had a bad RAM chip on one of my IIgs RAM cards (I got two IIgs' for free, one turned out to have a bad keyboard controller and the other turned out to have the bad RAM so I made two out of one), I'm trying to remember what the error code I got booting into GS/OS was with that one. The bad RAM had basically no effect on the operation of the machine unit GS/OS actually tried to use it.) And, yeah, come to think about it I'm pretty sure the internal diagnostics had no idea of the problem.

Yes, however I believe it can do this because the program doesn't take up that much memory. I don't know if the IIGS accesses the expansion card first or the memory on its motherboard. My IIGS can only boot software that doesn't take up too much memory (maybe this is because the program tries to access the defective chip?) I too believe that I have a bad RAM chip but I don't know where to look to begin sourcing a replacement.

As for other software the IIGS will try to boot it and then time out at fatal error. I believe this issue is similar to the issue I had with my Apple ///. It could boot Apple // emulation and run it but it couldn't boot the more demanding Apple /// software. Do you think replacing that memory expansion board all together will solve this issue or could there be a fault with the main board? If I remove the memory board the machine runs perfectly and passes all the RAM tests on the diagnostic disk.
