apple IIe problem

When I use some program on the apple IIe (some high res program I think), the pictures look ok but the text is all giberish unreadable.

For example when I run GEOS the icons look fine, but the text is all giberish for some reason. I get the same problem with Battle Chess for example. I tried colour and black an white monitors as well as a tv.

What could be the problem?

It might be a problem with the High res mode. When I type HGR and then go into the monitor and start drawing dots by using commands such as 2100:1 the dots appear to me moving. They look like a ver small line instead of a dot.

Could it also be because my apple IIe is pal and the program has been designed for NTSC?

Mousepaint seems to work fine. I'm trying the joystick version on asimov. where can i get the mouse version (so as to see if i have problems with mousecharacter routines on the rom).

Update: I have the same damn problem with apple II desktop! I truly don't get it. The text loading selector is displayed fine, but once I get into the desktop all characters are gibberish! I spent ages googling for help with no luck.

Update 2: Eureka!! I changed the bukly apple 80 column card for a small, generic 80 column card that I had bought to use on another machine and it solved the problem!!!

The question now is, why does my apple 80 column card cause the machine to display giberish when using certain graphic programs like GEOS or Apple II desktop, but others work fine mousepaint ? (i guess that that one only uses 64k?). ADTpro shows the extra 64 k on the Apple 80 column card and I can write data to it with no problem, so in that regards it seems to be working.

Any ideas?

The problem could be in the chips on the apple extended 80 column card. Try pushing them in, to make sure they are all seated correctly. Beyond that I have no idea, but maybe somebody else here can help.
