aw crap. thats a PITA. I never owned a CD-SC or ever had one apart, so i had no idea, but ive had to take apart some crazy shit, Wii being one of them, not so bad once you find all the screw locations. NDS on the other hand, fogettaboutit
This thread helped me bring my AppleCD SC back to life - see attached before and after pics of the dirty lens. As OP mentions, you can hear the laser trying to focus even before spinup, but then it just ejects the caddy after a few moments. A quick clean with lenspaper and lens cleaning solution did the trick for me. Also, there is a bank of short yellow connectors between the PCB and the drive housing, but if you've removed all the gray connectors from the outer PCB assembly to get this far, then you actually don't need to disconnect all the yellow ones - you can just feed the gray ones some slack and then bend the yellow ones like a hinge and you'll have plenty of room to get to the lens.
