Apple CD 300i External SCSI for System 6 Classics

Here's my issue...

I actually have four of these drives. One is in use on my Plus. I've got CD-ROM Toolkit powering it.

I have three more that I'm going to be putting on Classics. Trouble is, I have only one copy of Toolkit and I'm using it on the Plus.

Is there a driver for System 6 that is free somewhere for these Macs or should I put System 7.0.1 on them and get a newer driver? (I also have three System 7.1 licenses that I don't have on any other machines so I could use this too if it's a base requirement). They will be running ClarisWorks 3.0 and Print Shop, nothing too demanding--maybe a game of 3 in Three now and then.

CD-Sunrise is a good, tiny, and free driver. It does not support audio playback, however, but if you're only interested in using the devices for data, then that's a terrific driver. I have yet to encounter a drive that does not work with it.

If you want audio support, get Apple's own v5.3.1 drivers. Both are available from:

You may also want desktopmgr to prevent attempts at rebuilding the disc's desktop. System 6 tries this with a lot of discs. Very annoying. This will take care of that:

Your best bet is the Apple drivers. When these drives were new, they came with a floppy disk with version 4.2, which supported Systems 6.05 -> 7.1.

For the record, "AppleCD 300i" is actually the name given to the internal version of these drives, hence the 'i' at the end. The external version, which you have, is simply called the AppleCD 300.

FWB Software no longer seems to exist, and no company seems to have purchased or otherwise taken over their old products. So, I would say that CD-ROM Toolkit and other FWB products are abandonware in the truest sense, and that it would probably be fine to just go ahead and use it on all your Macs if you want.

The drives are 300e, not 300i. My bad. I was thinking of that internal drive I came across yesterday when I was in my cabinet.

I downloaded CD-Sunrise--for the price you can't go wrong! I'm not going to be playing audio on there at all so it's no big deal--just need something to install ClarisWorks 3.0 with.

Sad to hear about FWB. Hard Disk Toolkit would have been nice to have for OS X. Did they just go under or something?

FWB was a very old Mac software seller, so their loss was particularly sad -- if you read copies of MacWorld from the mid 1980s, you'll find their adverts for the first FWB Utilities. Their demise was long and complicated. A Google search for "FWB RealPC development" should throw up some useful links.

Indeed...I got hooked on FWB with CD-ROM Toolkit. I liked it so much I got 2.0 as soon as it came out. Hard Drive Toolkit was pretty nice as well.
