Anybody Got A Portable, PB 100/Earliest System Possible?

Mac128

68020
Here's a couple of odd-ball questions.

Can the 100 display 512x342 or only 640x400?

Has anyone actually tried to boot a 100 with anything less than System 6.0.7? Since it's a 68000 processor does anything prevent it from booting off a much earlier system like the Classic can?

My 100 is half a world away, so I can only tell you what I remember.

The resolution is fixed - there's no changing it. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the only PowerBook (at least until the WallStreet II came out) that let you change resolutions on the LCD was the 500-series, which could switch from 640x480 to 640x400, probably for compatibility with older PowerBook-specific software or something.

I couldn't say about the System. Mine runs either 6.0.8 or 7.0.1 off of its tiny 20MB Conner hard drive.

The PowerBook 100 is essentially a shrunken Portable, so in reality anything software-wise that applies to the Portable would be roughly the same on the 100. Anybody know if the Portable can run older Systems?

Most of the 640x480 color PowerBooks (500c-series, 190cs, color Duos, 5300c) could be set at 640x400 in 16-bit "Thousands" color mode, or 640x480 8-bit "256" color mode. I think only the 165c and 180c were incapable of this.

They did this solely by not displaying the top and bottom 40 pixels, no stretching was attempted. (Essentially, you got 'letterboxing' in high-color mode.)

It will only run Sytem 6.0.4 or newer. So Systen 5 & 4 stuff will not load.

When I had a 100 it would not run Alice.

Did you actually try to boot with anything less than 6.0.4? I need to make some pre 0.4 boot disks in order to experiment myself. I would think they should be installed for use with a SE. My understanding was that the Portable ROM included all the ROM patches made to the SE in addition to the new Power Manager stuff.

I tried to boot up with System 3.2 which got me the happy Mac then turned sad, before the System file loaded, so there was no basic hardware issues. However, I would think System 4.x on should work given that it supported SE resources. If not, I would think there is some way to trick an earlier system into running on the 100 as it seems to be mainly a software limitation in order to support some power manager features which are irrelevant if plugged into a power supply.

I wonder if the Portable would run an earlier system given that Apple's Gestalt ID system was not fully developed in 89. Anybody with one wanna give it a shot?
