Wednesday scored a working ANS 700/200. Have not started it up yet. Going to take a vacuum to it first. Very dusty. No software.

Yesterday, I got the 500/132 from the warehouse. They tried to sell it, but gave up. They lost the key, so they nocked out the lock.

 
Yes, I have two. One boots as far as the AiX start up screen and the other

has not been booted up yet. Going to take a vacuum cleaner to it tomorrow.

 
Congratulations! The more I´m dealing with that box the more I like it - although it´s the far most complicated machine I ever had to deal with. In the meantime I managed to get nearly all software for it, just the Apple distribution fixes and the RAID card software are still missing.

While the configuration of AIX itself is quite easy its very difficult to connect it to a network: there is just one Apple PCI NIC that can handle 100 MBps, all the others drop that box to 10 MBps. Besides this I´ve tested more than 30 other PCI cards leaving just two that will work together with that server.

Now I´m trying to put some drives into the back of the server due to lack of interface cards for the drive trays in the front. Guess what: this will be another conquest! Apple not only used rather unusual 68 VHDCI SCSI connectors but also a power connector which is non standard at all.

This explains why other ANS owners used SCI PCI cards and tried to get the power supply cables from somewhere else in that box...

These details once again show very clearly that the ANS is very close to an IBM RS/6000, closer than to a PM 8500.

Started up the 700/200 without monitor, keyboard, or mouse. the LCD says

202mb's of ram.

It has 2x 18gb Seagate Baracuda hds. ST318275LW

2x 4gb Apple/Seagate Baracuda hd's ST15150H

1x Sony Tape Drive STD-9000

1x 8x Apple cd-rom

1x Floppy drive

2x PSU

1x PCI NIC
