Another C500

Well, I snagged another C500 from @defor … they’re multiplying!

I just love the form factor of these…very nearly a pizza box!

Anyone else have a deep and abiding love for the weird Macs and clones? 🙃

I’ll post a few pics later today. As is typical of defor this machine is super clean.

I owned a C500 for a few years. It was an improvement over the Performa 6360 it was based on, because it had more PCI slots and a faster CPU.

I love the Umax SuperMac c500 as well! I have two, a 180 and a 200, although the 180’s power supply is dead. 🙁

Is it possibly the most compact old world Mac …with two PCI slots?

When I was in college in the late 90s we used a c500 as the NAT router for our college newspaper office to get all our machines online with our single high speed (10Mb!) campus connection. Two PCI Ethernet cards and IPNetRouter! These were the days before you could buy a cheap Linksys router to do the same thing.

Nice pickup!

I ended up with a bunch of Umax clone bits and pieces. C500 and J700 bezels, a CPU, several S900 port doors (the piece that often breaks off and gets lost) and a nearly complete S900 / Pulsar (logic board, PSU, panels, etc. Just missing the chassis, but I believe a Dell Dimension would work as a donor machine.)

So yeah, I guess I’m in the weird clone appreciation club too. But I probably need to list most of the above on the trading post, it’s collecting dust.

I had a 3Dfx Voodoo 2 card and an 10 MB ethernet card installed in my C500. I was amazed the first time I saw Unreal running on that machine - a Mac gaming computer!

I've been into PowerComputing clones mainly, but that's mostly because I just happened to acquire one – a PowerBase 200 – way back in 2005.

It was my only clone for years until I found a PowerTower Pro/225 a few years ago (I'm fairly sure it was pre-COVID).

I've never really paid much attention to anything else, except the S900, which has been quite popular, and the C500, because of this thread :)
