Does anyone know where I can find some sort of accelerator for my slow Mac plus? I don’t care how small the improvement. Is there a possible way to build one like a brainstorm?
There are several great accelerators for the Mac Plus that become available on eBay and elsewhere from time to time. The Radius Accelerator 16 (020), Novy Quick30 Plus (030) and Quesse Total Systems Gemini (030), among others, will all work in a Plus and all allow you to add a 68881/68882 FPU if you want. The Novy and Quesse boards also allow for memory upgrades, and one seems to appear on eBay every several months or so, but sometimes are a bit expensive. You can find them if you are patient and lurk around the usual places to find vintage Mac parts.
Be aware though that (most) Plus upgrades will require you to solder machine headers or sockets to your 68000 and some of them also require additional jumper wires (like the Brainstorm for example which grabs the 16MHz clock signal directly from the logicboard)
Most upgrades that might have come with a clip-on socket for the CPU are missing that part nowadays.
That is true. I can also testify that the old Killy clips that have survived (1) are easy to break and (2) tend to come loose if you look at them wrong while doing any work inside your old Mac, resulting in sporadic boot failure until you resecure everything. Soldering header pins is recommended anyway.
