Hi,

My A/UX 3.1 Update CD is damaged, anyone know of any way to get a replacement? I did come across a CD image on the interweb, but unfortunately its corrupted and wont install.

Cheers,

Ah, if you have UNIX skills a mere matter of file corruption won't hold you back!

From memory, the issue is one of the tar or cpio files is corrupted, so instead of using the installer, do it yourself.

Well, I'd settle for some skills full stop :)

Yes, it looks like it gets pretty much the whole way through, then complains that the touchsec (I think) file is corrupt so rolls everything back. Its a pretty quick install and I havent done anything with it yet, so I may as way have a poke at it - the install of 3.0.1 itself is incredilbly straight forward its just not funny - I almost fell off my chair at how easy it was. Anyhoo, I'll try that (although a good copy of the update would be nice too).

BTW, I just noticed you are from NZ as well - hope you are avoiding the swine flu - I have found that a mix of energy drinks and aclohol seems to be effective at keeping it away - I'm thinking of patenting it and selling it to the government as alternative to the vaccine.

Cheers,

You are a legend and I applaud you.

I was blinded by the Finder, but now I see that this is UNIX. I found a folder called "Unix Files" copied the contents across to my /tmp directory and ran the included script. While it was running that, I used the finder to copy across to the "Mac" updates to the appropriate locations on my MacPartition - I am loving this system.

The script complained that it couldnt find the "touchsec" file but kept on a rockin and after a reboot, a uname -a reports A/UX 3.1 - good enough for me!

Thanks!

Use the graphical installer in "custom" mode and install the packages individually, hence you'll find the one that is corrupted. That sorts most of them out. Then deal with the cpio archive with the corruption by unpacking it using cpio yourself.

Cool, now you have the 3.1.1 update to go.

I had imaged both CDs and uploaded them to a ftp site (owned by a guy who frequents the aux newsgroup) but it looks like that FTP is down now.

Hmmm, yes. I wasnt going to apply that - I'd read on the interweb that it has quite a performance hit on the SE/30 - but I suppose I have no base of reference anyway, so maybe it doesnt matter.

I dont suppose you've ever used it (3.1.1) on an SE/30 and have a view on its worth vs impact?
