A Not-so-vintage 2007 Black MacBook

I'm typing this on my new MacBook,which has finally arrived after some trouble with the seller's PayPal account. It is unfortunately running Tiger, but I should have some Snow Leopard disks soon, and I'll go straight to Tiger from there. As the seller said, the battery is shot, so I'll have to order a replacement soon.

Apple had a recall (well sony did) about sony battery cells exploding/warping/setting on fire due to defect. At that time, a lot of manufactures of laptops did recalls because the sony cells were going back, and could possibly set on fire. I believe it was the second time sony's battery cells have had recalls that I know of.
The battery bulging and not fitting into the macbook is a serious issue, and if the cells rupture/get out of control, they can actually cause the battery to catch fire (or explode!) so if you have that battery, get it to apple as quick as you can. Betcha apple will replace it for free. If that battery has defective sony cells, that thing should've been recalled a loooonggg time ago. Also if you still have it, put it outside.
I am quite scared of the Li-Poly batteries in the new systems. After dealing with RC Airplanes which use the new Li-Po batteries, I am scared to have one in my house with how dangerous those things are.
I was told when I got my Nightvapor (teeny RC Airplane) with a li-po batery smaller than a chewing gum pack that if it did rupture, that itty bitty battery pack (weighs less than a penny!) could burn my house down if it runs-away during charging.
I really wish apple hadn't put Li-Poly batteries un-removable without pulling the bottom off in the macbook pros. It scares me to be around those as it doesn't take much for a li-po with a defect to cause massive damage (I have seen what happens when a li-po RC pack the size of a chewing gum pack exploded in a metal container. It burned so hot it actually burned a slight hole through the side, and it wasn't even charging!!!)
*shudders* I still keep my li-po batteries for the RC plain in a custom fire box when not in use. I just don't trust those things....

Coius, those all would have been Li-Ion cells, not LiPo cells. My 2008 GF8600mGT MBP15 has a LiIon battery, and I'm pretty sure all of the plasticbooks with removable batteries did too.
That having been said, something is probably wrong with how you're handling or the build on that specific RC battery you're using if it failed that massively.
I've got a LiPo battery from the T400 (the ultrabay battery which I used for a few years) and have got to say, I'm basically not scared of it. Although it's totally spent so I should consider having it recycled, since it serves poorly as a weight-saver or power-saver, compared to using the empty UltraBay hard disk holder.
If you're so scared of batteries though, my advice is to own zero notebook computers, handheld gaming systems, mobile phones, tablets, and cameras. Then you won't have [very many] batteries to worry about. You can probably keep a UPS around if you'd like, I like to suspect that most of those are still based on lead-acid batteries.
