9 on a 601 upgraded Quadra?

So I was playing around with the idea of adding a second drive to my 7500 as the 500mb drive I was using is too small. I decided to just put a bigger drive in and upgrade one of my other machines with the 500mb but which one? My homemade Quadra 700 came to mind but the drive has 9.0.4 on it and would need a system downgrade. Having inherited a certain degree of insanity from hanging around here for so long, I decided to try connecting the drive with 9 installed and the 601 upgrade turned on and see how far it would boot. On the good side, I got a happy Mac when I started up so it did recognize there was a system it could load but on the bad side it froze before I got to the desktop. Anyone have any ideas what I might need to do to get this to work?

There is a website around somewhere with a long history of tips and tricks for the Turbo601. I think it had a sister site for the Quadra 601-based upgrades. And the hints on the Turbo601 site might be applicable to the Quadra upgrades. They're very similar. I think brinnen or brinovven or something like that was in the URL.

Sonnet had an enabler to let upgraded machines use 8.5/8.6, but I've never heard of anyone getting OS 9 to work. Admittedly most links about such things seem to have fallen into the bitbucket of history.

Now for the question. Who has a copy of the Sonnet Presto PPC install disk? That seems like a logical place to go first.

i did run 9 on my 650 with apple 66mhz 601 card...

its just as simple as getting 8.5 and 8.6 to work. it was a bit crashy tho but did run.

I remember hearing back in the day of people getting OS 8.5 - 9 to work on PPC upgraded Quadras by using a program such as Wish I Were to change the Getstalt ID to that of a similar Power Mac model. For example, if you're installing onto a PPC upgraded 610, you'd change the ID to that of a 6100, if you're installing onto a 650, you'd change the ID to that of a 7100, etc. Not sure how well it works, and even if you did get it to work, it'd be incredibly slow, but anyway its just an idea.

You'll need to read the Read Me file about users with PowerPC upgrade cards. There's usually a section on that. It should be on the Install CD.
