8" SVGA color CRT

I was at Weird Stuff today (and, incidentally, met a fellow MLAer :)) and walked out with a cool tiny CRT for $15. It's the same size as the Color Classic, but this little beast can easily push 800x600 SVGA. I'm going to hook it up and see if it'll go to 1024x768. The plastic is a little yellowed, but the tube is in great condition. Colors are good and there's no ghosting. :)

That's really neat.. Sounds like it may have come from a Point-of-Sale system. Those were really fun back in the day. Enjoy using it!

Wouldn't do 1024x768, but 800x600 is not too shabby. I think you're right, it was probably a POS display for a cash register because the VGA cable is really short.

Here's a pic of it running on my QuickSilver... literally. Can't read it, but it's 800x600 @ Millions colors. :) I'm still trying to get it to work with my IIci or LC. It doesn't like the adapter I have.

They have three more of the displays. 2 of them were arcing (I could hear it) with the display flickering every time it did that. Made me jump. And the third's case is written on with all sorts of pens and paint. I might pick up that one to dissect for my Color Classic, if it fits.

... and you're hesitating why???

Heck, I'd be tempted to pick up the other two and fix them / have them serviced.

certain dag coating chemicals break down over the years, and it will arc out. Ive noticed this in alot of older all-in-one machines.

I sanded and recoated a CRT once with a fresh coat of dag, and it fixed it.

It COULD be this, not saying that it definately is.

I took my little monitor apart as well as one of my Color Classics. The amount of wires in there scared me away. I wouldn't know what to do. However, my new mini CRT is shorter than the one in the color classic, but the board and nobs for adjusting the picture geometry are connected to the back of the tube, so it's 3x wider at the end. I'm afraid I just don't know enough about how these work for me to even attempt a CRT upgrade. I guess I was hoping it'd just be a couple wires to swap.

Nice Monitor! I had a 10 incher once upon a time, but I can't find the CRT . . . it was probably in a box at the "lost" storage room . . . :-/

FUGGETABOUDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :disapprove: Ain't never gonna happen . . .

. . . the IIci needs a NuBus Implant to give you any resolutions other than IIci's VampireVideo 640 x 480 @ 66.67 Hz FixedRes 13-14 inch RGB output or 640 x 870 @ 75.0 Hz FixedRes Macintosh Portrait Display choices.

The IIsi ups the ante to include the 16" FixedRes output of 832 x 624 @ 75 Hz. I haven't looked, but I 'll bet the DevNote for the LC will confirm that it is limited to the IIci's crummy, VGA repulsive, FixedRes Box-Topper CRT video output choices. That's my guess, based upon its being a Low End Mac vs. the IIsi's Mid-Range Marketing Placement.

The IIci was a VERY Early High End Color Mac Product with the very first on-board, extremely limited Video Output and NuBus VidCard Expansion is really the only way to get any VGA friendly, or any large screen resolution, output with ANY Mac Video Adapter ever made, AFAIK.

The Radius Color Pivot II/IIsi/SE/30 Hackin' and UnderClockin' threads cover this subject in more depth . . . sorta! :-/

I have a Futura II card in it. I think it might be the adapter. I have one with the dip switches. I'm going to try a passthrough adapter next.

The SE/475 project might help you get started. Also the Poor Man's Greyscale SE/30.
