7600 strange issue

Ok, some tests and some news!

Removed all ram, insert only 2 dimm's (64x2 A4/B4). No chime, but the screen appear very fast... 10/20 seconds, is clear the time of black screen is memory test, more memory, more black screen.

I removed all! Only 2 dimm's (16x2 A4/B4), removed all pci boards, restored 604 cpu. Boot from cd. Shutdown, boot.... chime ok!!!

Restored Sonnet G3... no chime! But boot very fast.

Restored 604, chime ok.......... Sonnet kill my chime!!!

Restored all my ram with cpu 604, chime ok, 45 seconds of black screen!

Sonnet G3 vs 604 = chime or not chime, no other difference

At this time i think 45 seconds of black screen at first boot is normal, is ram related... Mac run at first boot a full memory test, memory is so much and the time is long.

The conclusion is: I reinstall G3, not listen the first chime and I wait 45 seconds at first boot   at least I understand why

The startup delay is the memory test - it is normal - with more RAM it takes longer.  Many G3 upgrades require faster RAM speeds (needing 60ns over 70ns).

i've seen some motherboards not working with G3s while others would do with the same components (i mean swaped ones). And these boards have been perfectly working for years with the original cpu.. they just wouldn't with a G3 card.

it's possible that yours is one of them.

You might try working with only the original CPU for some time, with full config, after full nvram reset, and then reswap cpu w/cuda reset to G3. Then you will know.

In any case you shouldn t use the 2x16Mb dimms that could be 70ns and are anyway useless if not too old and risky.

In fact 4x64Mb is enough and perfect for OS9 and thus you'll have 2 spare modules.

Is true I not have good English  but G3 work great in my system, the only problem is I can not hear the chime at first startup... I suspect the G3 drain more power and psu cut the power at speaker amp.

I have removed L2

The chime sound is stored in ROM. I expect the Sonnet board manipulates the boot process through its own ROM, perhaps bypassing part of the original system ROM in the process.
