The 8100 has a second "Fast" internal only SCSI bus using a NEC 53CF96 chip -- later SYMBIOS 53CF96 and still later LSI Logic 53CF96.. The 7100 has only the one SCSI bus.
This is why I suspect that the "MESH" chip in the x500 and X600 PCI PowerMacs is actually just a licensed 53CF96. The 9500 succeeded the 8100 and the second SCSI bus stayed exactly the same in functionality but the chip changed from 53CF96 to MESH.
