7.1 vs 7.5 (68030 and TCP/IP)

Question, can 7.1 properly handle TCP/IP or be installed with Open Transport? I am asking because would it make sense to stay in the 7.1 software branch when on 68030. I want to get decent performance out of my LC II and IIfx, saving OS RAM by running a slim 7.1 sounds like it might be better then 7.5.5

I need to be able to continue to use my Farralon Ethernet and basic ip apps like telnet, fetch, etc.,.

I've got kind of a janky ethernet card, so I'm not entirely sure if this 100% works, but I managed to get Open Transport working for at least a little bit on my SE/30 with 7.1.1. Honestly, though, you're probably better off just using MacTCP unless you need DHCP for whatever reason. You can only really make MacTCP work with a static IP address, so it'll only work on a simpler network, but it works just fine there. I used my SE/30 to browse FTP servers all the time with MacTCP.

I use OT 1.1.2 on my IIfx with OS 7.1 and all is well.

What did you end up doing to get system 7.1 to go online? I have not been able to figure it out. I want it mostly for apple talk through Ethernet.

I used it mostly for file transfers over Ethernet. Had that setup for over a decade and the best IE version available at the time was too old for real web browsing even then.

P.S. You need to install OT 1.1.1 then upgrade to 1.1.2.

Classic networking ("Network" control panel for AppleTalk, MacTCP for TCP/IP) works just fine if you're okay with a static IP address. My SE and SE/30 running System 7.1 both connect, and even browse with MacWeb 1.1, just fine.

I use MacTCP, but it doesn't support DHCP.  That's not a problem for me since I'm on a home network.

I'm using 7.1 with MacTCP 2.1 on my SE/30.  Haven't done any browsing, just for FTP file sharing on my local network.  The MacTCP control panel would complain if I tried to enter the machine IP address, subnet mask, and router address in one go.  Had to do router address, save/close.  Then subnet mask, save/close.  Finally, machine IP address and close.  That did it with no errors.
