61xx DOS card price

Hey guys,

I was browsing craigslist for mac stuff as usual when I'm bored and noticed a listing for a DOS card for $10.

They didn't really go into detail about the exact model, other than It includes the Windows 3.1 disks.

Just wondering if this is a good deal since I don't actually own any 61xx macs but would like to snag if its actually worth more.

For $10 I would pick it up myself. But I am not sure they are worth much. I have seen upwards of $40 and as low as $5. Like much of the vintage market, prices are all over and to get optimal you have to know the right buyer.

Yeah, I think i'll probably pick it up if its still for sale in the next few days. I've been wanting to get a 6100 for awhile now, so when I finally do the card will actually have a purpose.

They're not worth much because of their lowly specifications, a Cyrix 486 in most cases I believe?

Irony. I've got a 6100/66 with a dos card ( this one I think -> http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/specs/powermac_6100_66.html),but the poor thing no longer has a working hard drive. Dratted SCSI drives, but then the computer is also 20 years old.

I have one of the DOS card 6100 models (there is printing on the 6100 case so you know). Its fun to mess around with and since it has built in sound you can play games. Like anything else collectable if a glut hit the market they would be worthless, but in a dry spell somebody will pay a few bucks for one (if it has the correct cable). The downside is you are kind of stuck with a limited OS you can use (same with the Apple PCI Pentium cards for the 75xx and 85xx series) plus you need the correct cable. 486 and Pentium 1 cards are limited in what you can do. I prefer Nubus  cards from OrangePC since its cool running OS 7.x and Win 3 on the same machine.

i wonder if they will run OS/2 Warp?   that would be kinda cool…    i just got a whole box of these from Ted Hodges...

They can't run any operating system that isn't DOS based, or more specifically, requires its own drivers for disk drive access instead of relying on the Int 13h BIOS services. PC Setup 2.0 added native Windows 9x drivers, but without any dev. info, other OSes will never run on that card.

I'd go as far as to say fairly worthless from a purely monetary point of view, as they really don't do anything overly cool, but definitely worth getting for $10 for intrinsic novelty value alone, however as Charles pointed out, it is an entirely worthless paperweight unless it has the correct breakout cable to go with it.

I have that 6100-Dos card but it is working only 1-3 minutes, then it freezes or it displays "022" after cold reboot. Don't know why?

I got it out of the housing and put it in my Quadra700 and it works without any issues. 

The construction of the Doscard and the 6100 is a bit of a failure. I think there is a thermal problem, when the dos-card is put in the 6100.

I would have let the dos-card in the quadra700 but there were three major problems with this:

1. The card is not really well placed in the Quadra700. The expension board that "fixes" this should be so rarely that I will never find it.

2. The sound could not be transferred to the quadra700, because there is no audio in with the matching cables. The case does not fit, when the audio-cable is plugged in the card.

3. I already have the ppc-card in that same slot, so going for a NUBUS-PC-Card should be the better deal.

If you have a 6100 and you don't already have one of the G3 upgrade fitted it's great for just filling the slot. I mean it's not fast but hey, it will beat the pants off software emulation, PLUS you can kill two birds with one stone. You got a classic mac AND a DOS machine in the same space.

Otherwise for you NuBus people I'd recommend just finding one of the Orange Micro cards.

And in cleaning out my closet, my 6100/DOS Compatible (yes, labeled that way,) just became visible.  It'll probably be the one I take a shot at getting and playing with tomorrow.

The fun part is that I have the matching AudioVision display.  So in order to use it with the DOS card, you have to DOUBLE OCTOPUS CABLE the beast.  I'll be sure to take pictures of the cabling monstrosity.

I have a 6100/Dos Compatible as well.  However, I don't have the breakout cable, or an HDI-45 to hd-15/vga adapter.  So I have no way to use the computer.  But with a hard drive loaded up with 7.6 connected it does make a startup chime, and after a minute or so the simple beep sound... I'm assuming that it's the pop up saying the date&time is off.  Maybe one day I'll have the hardware to actually use it.

HDI-45-to-DA-15 adapters are pretty easy to find - they pop up on eBay for a few bucks regularly.
