32-bit Addressing in SE/30

For those that having been reading my posts on the forum, I'm now a little bit closer to scaling to the peak of Ultimate SE/30! :)

Now, that I've solved, with the help of my fellow comrades:

My next step is to install more memory, but the issue is the 32-bit addressing issue. I've read Gamba's page on this topic and I've sourced myself a 32-bit clean ROM, but my question to my comrades is:

As I've already installed System 7.5.5 on my SE/30 with stock ROM, can I now go back and install the 32-bit clean ROM and ResEdit the system file as per Gamba's instructions, or do I need to do a clean install of 7.5.3/7.5.5? :?:

Not sure what you mean by installing a 32-bit clean ROM - your SE/30 can run 32-bit clean using the Mode32 utility under System 7.5.5, or source a IIfx/IIsi ROM SIMM to do so natively.

Hi also from Melbourne :D

I can't imagine why you'd need to re-install the 7.5.3/7.5.5 OS you just put on your CF Card, unless you just dragged the folder from one partition to another. With only 8MB of built in RAM in your current config, as shown in your screen shot, you probably don't have Mode32 installed. Just install some higher capacity SIMMs and do your thing in the Memory Control Panel!

Actually, didn't you already have 32 bit addressing toggled ON in order to have activated Virtual Memory? :?:

Is your clean ROM SIMM already installed?

In my experience, any System between 7.0 and 7.5.5 would boot fine in either clean or dirty ROMs. I do it frequently on the IIx, which uses the very same ROM as the SE/30. Tried an SE/30 with clean ROM, too. You don't need to reinstall or ResEdit anything.

With a clean ROM, you don't need Mode32 either, but it won't hurt if already installed... by the way, in order to install it, just copying the extension won't do -- the use of the original installer is mandatory. The last version of it is compatible with all of the aforementioned System versions, not restricted to 7.5.5.

In any case, you have to enable 32-bit addressing on the Memory control panel. If you have more than 8 MiB of RAM, they will show up as Built-in memory; but the System will appear to "waste" most of it, leaving the same free space as if you had just 8 MiB.

Hi guys,

Just to clarify, I have an IIsi ROM SIMM installed in my SE/30. 8Mb RAM.

I was able to start up to System 7.5.5 with the 32-bit clean ROM SIMM installed but it was still not addressing more than 8Mb of RAM, I went into the Memory control panel and turned off virtual memory and turned on 32-bit addressing, rebooted and got this:

:disapprove: :O :(

Obviously, with 8 MB of physical RAM, there's no way to address anything over 8 MB, even with 32-bit addressing... with Virtual Memory enabled, you can't go over 11 MB with 24-bit addressing; while 32-bit allows up to 1 GB, HD space permitting -- just checked in my (clean, 6 MB) Colour Classic and my (dirty, 20 MB) SE/30.

I have several Systems installed on HDs, from 7.0.1 to 7.5.5, all of them for any Macintosh, with Mode32 installed -- they all boot fine several machines with either dirty or clean ROMs. The latest version is even able to boot a PowerMac 7600 (upgraded to G3 @ 450 MHz) wihout hesitation.

Your sad mac is strange... but since the clean ROM on an "unexpected archtecture" may get confused with some PRAM settings, have you tried resetting the PRAM (hold cmd-option-P-R during startup until a second chime is heard)?

Thanks for your help Zuiko! :)

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem before, but I'll describe it so that if anyone else runs into it they can read this and save them some time:

I have my SE/30s installed IIsi and IIfx ROM SIMM, following the instructions found on Gamba's page. I was able to boot into System 7.5.5 with 32-bit clean SIMM, but I noticed that whenever I go into the memory control panel on the SE/30 and restart, it causes a Sad Mac (see post above) and make the previously bootable drive unbootable! :disapprove: When I attach the drive into the my Power Mac 7200, it tells me the drive is unreadable and needs to be formatted! :(

Luckily, I had a DiskCopy image of the ResEdited System 7.5.5 and I reformatted the disk and copied over the image onto the freshly formatted disk. I then restarted the Power Mac using the ResEdited System 7.5.5 and turned off virtual memory and then restarted again.

Then I plugged the disk back into my SE/30 and it started up fine, restart, no more Sad Mac. :) :) :)

Now I can get onto the easy part and install more RAM. First I need to convince my wife... ;)
