17" CRT Studio Display

Freecycle has provided me with a new piece of kit, namely a 17" CRT Studio Display.

It's powered through the ADC port and looks very neat and tidy sat on my desk connected to my Quicksilver however it has 1 fault that I would like to put right.

The glass screen has got dozens and dozens of feint 'lines' on it running in a roughly (very roughly) circular pattern across most of the screen. The lines give an effect similar to what would be seen if the screen had been wiped with a damp cloth that had left streaks.

Does the front of this screen have some sort of coating that could be rubbed off in this manner?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

sorry this is a very late response...

my display (before I sold it with a system) used to be the same.

but yes. they're is a coating. methylated spirits, warm water, a soft cloth stripped it off. only a little bit of pressure needed :)

Cool! 8-) What's the chemical makeup of "methylated spirits" because it doesn't ring a bell for me. :?:

Sounds like it could be OzTalk for what we call either "Denatured Alcohol" OR "MEK" to me.

Has anyone found a User or, more importantly, the Service Manual .PDF for this monitor?

I can't find it listed on any of the "usual" sites?

TIA for any info! :approve:

That's right. The denaturing agent isn't always methanol, though, the idea is to discourage people from drinking it, not actually kill them.

Hey Tom you are a genius!

I started off using Isopropyl Alcohol on cotton wool but found that an awful lot of pressure was required and the coating was lifting off painfully slowly. I tried warm soapy water but this did not touch it at all.

I then remembered that some time ago my wife bought some 'magic' cloths from the local supermarket. The're called 'No More Chemicals' and are a cotton cloth impregnated with silver. They are very smooth but somehow the silver helps the cleaning.

This cloth dampened with IPA cleaned the whole screen in under 5 minutes - it looks as good as new

Thanks for helping out!

OK, we're talking about ethanol (the stuff that gets you drunk) denatured (purposely polluted) with methanol (wood alcohol that makes you blind if you drink it) and warm soapy water!

Right? :?:

Mine's actually a bit scratched and another member buffed the coating off his CRT, but couldn't recall which type/grade of rouge/buffing agent he'd used at work. Hence, the inquiry about the service manual!

Thanks! [;)] ]'>
