Got a working disk drive to make sure it's not something to do with the logic board. The new drive works, so it's definitely the drive.
The drive did not write to the disk and would just eject the disk after formatting. The disks appeared to be untouched when put in another Mac, however, they would not boot so the drive did damage the info on them.
The disk drive will be shelved for now unless someone has another idea.
