Yeah, plastics on most of the powerbooks of the 90s are quite brittle. If you still want to try to repair it, the 140, 145, 145B should all use the same cable and I bet there is someone with a spare cable on this forum. You don't necessarily need to glue the polarizer on either, I just cut mine...
No problem. Good news is that generally the display is perfectly fine underneath the mess. I think (though I am not certain) that there may also be a polarizer on the back of the display.
Best of luck with the repair!
Its vinegar syndrome. It is a degradation of the polarizer film and the adhesive which holds it on. The polarizer film is basically what allows you to see the screen properly.
It happens over time and the warmer it is and the more moisture in there air there is, the faster it happens. It can...
I unfortunately dont remember if the drive spun up since its been a while.
Speaker pop means at least something is happening. I found a photo of my test setup for it at its just the boards put together on some bubble wrap. If you can try that, you should be able to get the boards lined up much...
Mine acted similar at first but had a solid green light. After a fair bit of trial and error re-seating the boards, I got it to power on and it works fine now. The CPU did get warm and there was no chime or video, but I don't remember if I heard the speaker kick on or not.
My 2400 also had much...
For what its worth, I have restored several types of keyboards (100 series, 200 series, 500 series, IIc hairspring, ADB Keyboard II) with silicone grease and it works amazingly. A good cleaning to them also helps, but the grease makes it nice and smooth. It can also quiet down the keys a little...
I am almost 100% certain that it can indeed spread. I stupidly left several displays very close together including a display with vinegar syndrome. All of the displays apart from the one started out perfect and no signs of vinegar syndrome. After maybe 4-5 months, every single one had vinegar...
Hi all, I just got a powerbook duo 280c that has the upgrade for a 2300c logic board. This means it has the 2300c metal frame, but the rest of the parts are 280c.
The logic board doesnt work. It has been recapped but shows no signs of life. It also has a slightly melted component that I will...
I looked for any unusual signs of damage or overuse, but didn't find anything indicative of a problem. Just the fuse seemed to be bad, and everything else looked to be in good shape.
Well, both of my displays had vinegar syndrome, one much more so than the other. Both also came from Japan.
Ooh this looks like a fun project for my 540c. How difficult was it to source and swap over the chips? Did anything cause any problems during the process?
No, I mean that on the logic board internally, the 2300 has connectors for both SCSI and IDE hard drives, as well as all duo displays. The board was offered as an upgrade for all existing duos to PowerPC and thus is compatible with both IDE and SCSI as well as both the older passive matrix...
Actually, I believe the 2300c has a connector for SCSI and you just need the cable. It looks absolutely fantastic!
Keyboards on the duo lineup were generally bad, even when new so not a whole lot can be done. I wonder how much a rubber membrane would cost to produce...
Haha nice fix! Was it by chance a Connor drive? They are known to have sticky bumpers inside the drive. I don't have my duos in this country, so I have no idea what those leads are supposed to measure.
All are electrolytic, but some can be replaced by tantalums. Sometimes having the battery in will prevent booting.
When you open it, reseat all the connectors and cables to rule a loose connector out. If the backlight is dead, but the display works, it will still look like the display is off, so...
Logic board needs to be recapped. All 5 are electrolytic surface mount can style. I'm not entirely sure, but there may be capacitors on the display as well. Hard drive not spinning may be a dead drive or there may be a deeper problem. Is there any corrosion on the battery or in the computer...
I have a NOS battery for the 5300 that I got not long ago. It still works but I was intending on cutting it open and replacing the cells with modern, higher capacity cells. In the case that it is AA cells, would it be possible to use the 4/3A cells instead? Would that necessitate a 3d printed...
