I have the same simasimac pattern. I also ordered new RAM from OWC but that didn't fix the problem. Might just send it to someone who can take a look and troubleshoot it.

Yes, the option to initialize was grayed out in Drive Setup. That’s why it wouldn’t work even with a USB sd card reader, @LaPorta.

No CD drive but I copied the files to a CF card which is plugged in via a PCMCIA card reader. The PowerBook 3400 keeps ejecting the PCMCIA card reader, though. I formatted the SD card using my Pismo.

I've a Pismo, iBook G3 Clamshell, Mac Mini G4 and a Mac Mini 2018. I used my Pismo to format the CF and SD cards. CF cards won't boot because they aren't the industrial type.

I figured I should just use the PowerBook 3400 7.6 restore CD. I have burned it to a CF card but the PCMCIA card reader keeps getting ejected. Do I need a working PRAM battery to boot from a CF card? I tried pressing cmd + opt + shift + del at boot but it doesn't work.

While we're on the topic of IDE adapters, what's the best way to get OS 7.6.1 or Mac OS 8.6 into my PowerBook 3400c? I don't have floppies and don't have a CD drive for my PowerBook 3400c. Would it be to restore a .dsk created in Basilisk to the SD/CF card? Install from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot?

I'm curious, how large of a transfers are we talking about?

I've used the same adapter and CF card in a Firewire enclosure and inside an iBook G3 clamshell. No problems whatsoever on both. Doesn't work meaning I get the flashing ? when it boots.
