Reached out to these folks to see if they could rebuild a Powerbook 1400 battery but they said they didn’t have the cells. Reading above someone (beachycove?) said that Irina was able to order the cells for them. Any idea if I asked the wrong questions?
I had adventures with Stuffit, documented here: https://tendim.wordpress.com/2015/03/25/adventures-with-stuffit/. It looks like Aladdin made changes to the compression algorithms, which were not backwards compatible with older versions of Stuffit. Ultimately you need to work forwards with...
Hi group.
I'd like to start doing some more work on my Powerbook 3400. My intent is to make it into a triple boot (if not triple, dual boot) machine with:
Mac OS
Linux
NetBSD (if I can get triple boot; Linux is priority)
Biggest bottleneck on the machine is the hard drive (both in terms of...
Any recommendations on what to take pictures of, exactly?
I did reach out to Charles @ MacApps, and the feedback I received was "the pb160 i don’t think needs caps on the mb…as they are solid chemistry caps, now those are known for leakers in the screen and maybe inverter/BL board."
Cheers.
Purchased a PowerBook 160 off of eBay of unknown condition as a project piece, and also because I wanted a grayscale PB.
The unit did not come with a power brick, so I am using the brick from my PowerBook 165c. When I boot the machine:
I get the dong
Screen turns on
I can hear something...
To add to this, the 180 will the be easiest way to transfer material to the Plus, since the Plus can only read 800K floppies. I was in the exact same boat a few years ago and ended up buying a Powerbook 3400 as the "bridge" machine:
Intel Mac Mini w/ USB Floppy ---1.4MB disk---> Powerbook...
I am a complete OS geek, and the timing of this post is most fortuitous as I've just started taking a deep dive into the NetBSD world. But have to ask: why another OS? Linux has a strong following as an alternative as it is. If you are looking for a non-Linux project to back, why not work on...
Hi.
Now that I have started to use my 3400 on a more regular basis, I have been noticing many software problems; probably due to whatever the previous owner had installed/hacked with before I took it over. I'd like to do a fresh install of 7.6.1. At my disposal are:
System 7.6 install CD...
Great to hear a use for an old machine! My G4 12" is my dedicated film scanner machine because it has builtin FW400 (my Mini only has FW800). The machine sits nicely on top of the scanner, and I can then mount my main machine and transfer the files over via file sharing. :)
Pending my giving away of a 165c, I have three PowerBook's left, and I have to get rid of at least one system for space reasons.
PowerBook 3400c/200 with CD-ROM and Floppy modules
PowerBook Duo 2300c with three docs:
Minidock
Floppy MIcrodock
Ethernet Microdock
PowerBook 1400c with CD-ROM...
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I wanted to point out that you do not need the Iomega 4.2 driver to boot the Plus from a zip drive. I have a Plus setup booting happily off of a Zip100 drive using the LaCie Silverlining 5.x driver.

Well, after lots of searching online I found that the Dayna CommuniCard driver v2.2 is included on the Mac OS 8.1 install CD, which I was lucky enough to have in my collection. The driver now works, and the PB1400C is online! :)
I'll post up the driver sometime soon for others that run into...
Completely aware that the mod is incredibly easy. But why waste a good cable--and throw more useless crap in the trash--when you shouldn't need to? Part of the fun of retrocomputing is finding uses for old gear, not destroying more of it.
I was leaning more towards uniserver's comment that a...
Just received my CF AztecMonster the other day, and transplanted it into a SCSI enclosure to sit under my Mac Plus. I was extremely disappointed when I read this line in the manual:
Does anybody know why we would have to cut a wire on the SCSI header for this to boot from a Mac Plus? I'd...
Yes; all internal floppy drives are pretty much backwards compatible back to the original compact Macs, meaning you can create 400K, 800K, and 1.44MB floppies. I am currently using a 1400C as a bridge machine. You can also read this thread for other options...
I recenty acquired a PowerBook 1400C with a Dayna Communicard. I've managed to source the drivers from the Macintosh Driver Museum, and the software installs fine. But when I insert the card, I get a message, "the correct software you need to use your pc card is not installed".
Some notes...
