That's interesting, does the TAM keyboard use the exact same internals/membrane/housing as the 3400? Another reason to keep a junker 3400 in the parts bin if so :)
Sounds like OWC got a mismatched RAM stick from their supplier, the rogue module will down clock to PC2-3200 speeds and not be an outlier. There are utilities on the PC side that let you edit the SPD of the RAM modules if keen, but if working well I wouldn't bother.
The couple really liked their Duos - really decent haul.
You can fire up a vinegar syndrome LCD to see specs of the Mac etc - I'm coming across more now and at times the display can be remarkably visible. Others though it's a wash out.
@joshc yep very true, I like to think of the TAM as containing tried and true, reliable parts sticky taped together and then sold to a someone sipping a latte :) Nowadays though it is my most used Mac though and bridges everything pretty much. No evidence I need to recap mine and not overly...
@Njb796 I'm sure all is not lost the TAM is a fairly reliable Mac - yes, there I said it! With some care I'd like to think you will get it up and running again. I have put my TAM in a funk where it chimes and doesn't get any further this was usually related to a marginal PRAM battery and...
Hi,
P1: You know, you need to go back in and have another look at your work :). Deep clean around the replacement caps, and very close look around the Hybrid IC that is often taken out from corrosion. It has 1MB onboard so you can remove the RAM card for now.
P2: Portables are pretty rock...
Hi njb796,
Congrats on finding a TAM, I also had a well used one that came up well with some restoration time. You will find posts on here about recapping the unit (and subwoofer/PSU), personally I'm yet to tackle mine as there is no evidence of leaking but imagine I'll have to do it in a few...
It's the exact same drive in the external case, and straightforward to take apart (screws at bottom, lift off plastic housing, cable, remove shielding), there is your working internal test drive
Nice one, I also had a possessed 7300 in my hands recently. It had some upgrades/PCI cards, lots of RAM, would not boot or chime. Had to strip it down to absolute basics, sprayed and deep cleaned everything down, and had to literally run it stock no cards 16MB RAM, new OS install, play around...
The ATI Rage from a Blue&White G3 is a decent upgrade for any beige G3, much faster than onboard and super cheap. The beige G3 SGRAM is harder to find these days.
Hey jjuran,
Saw this on Vogons, nice work! Am keen to try some working but botched sound games on a beige G3 soon. Are there any other games that would go on the list?
JB
The powders (talcum, cornflour etc) can reduce the stickiness but it will come back eventually.
I've found you have to be quite aggressive rubbing off the sticky parts with warm soapy water (and ideally a microfibre cloth), this comes after you have let the parts soak in citric-based "goo gone"...
Clean the RAM slot and connectors thoroughly (electronic solvent cleaner is your friend), I had a similar issue with a 64MB modules in a PowerBook 3400c. Also check part number is for the 3400c not Kanga (G3), which are also at times not fully compatible.
Thanks for your considered comments, I understand we have to start somewhere and the more learnt the better. We're lucky to have you on board here!
Yes, I love the PiStorm in an A1200 as I'd never be able to afford/justify a souped up '060 in the same computer, but appreciate there are many...
With the original PCI bus, there are significant overheads and you'll never attain the stated maximum throughput of 133MB/s, let alone 166MB/s using an "ATA/166" card; good quality SD and CF cards used in good quality adapters provide improved performance over IDE-based spinning media any day of...
I’m fairly sure the Newton doesn’t have a file structure like that to copy individual programs and beam them to another Newton.
Short of not finding a dongle for your 2100, I would suggest looking for a later model PowerBook with IRDA built-in.
Enjoying the discussion - however have to ask with 68060 full fat CPU prices being stupid crazy high (and further starving the Amiga crowd if vintage Mac users start to grab) would efforts be better spent on a PiStorm-like solution for the Mac over bare metal upgrades such as these?
