    PowerTower Pro 225 questions

A PTP will run up to Mac OS 9.1 just fine. If you're putting that G4 in it then it'll run OS X as well with XPostFacto if you have sufficient RAM, and you can get 9.2.2 on it with some workarounds. I have a PowerTower Pro that I recently souped up. Video card, IDE card, USB, Firewire, and...

    PowerMac 7600 3.3v ram

EDO is faster than FPM, but I'm not sure if the 7600 took advantage of that at all or if they just run effectively in FPM mode. I think the 6500/TAM was the only board to actually use EDO as they strongly recommend those over FPM, but I could be mistaken on that.

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

Funny enough, the PT Pro I tried first had the fewest issues of all of them, though I didn't swap out the CPU or try to put OS X on it.

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

Huh, at least part of the problem may be that I have a Sonnet TempoATA 133 that either doesn't like old world machines or is just plain bad. It would work and I could install to a drive attached to it (though sometimes that would come with read errors that made it look like the CD-ROM drive was...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

I got a can of Deoxit and worked a possessed 7300/200 over with it. I hit every slot, then set something in and out of the slot while it was wet. All contacts cleaned and dried. The G3 333mhz (running at 350mhz) CPU upgrade is now working flawlessly! It boots up just fine and the Powerlogix...

    Powerbook 3400c RAM weirdness

Just cleaned the contacts, no luck. Transcend told me that it's EOL, so no warranty, which was expected. I dunno what the problem is. Maybe loose solder joints? I've put the 96MB stick back in and put the 64MB sticks in a bag. Maybe someday I can have someone with the right equipment and...

    Mathey MSATA-02MAC SATA Card

Is it the same thing with other SATA cards with the 3.3v/5v VRM problem or other quirks? Quicksilvers and their pickiness. Do you have another machine to try it out? Also, any indication as to what the jumper on the card might be for? I guess I'm spitballing here.

You sure that's ATA166 and not a mistype? I thought UDMA-7 didn't find much purchase as SATA showed up and didn't really get used in desktop systems much at all. I don't recall ever seeing a Mac card for it, but I'd be very curious about it if I'm wrong on that.

    Powerbook 3400c RAM weirdness

Yeah, I need to get some contact cleaner for a number of machines. I've ordered some. It's 100% a 3400/240, and the RAM is 100% for a 3400 (it's on the label), so I can't imagine anything is incompatible. I doubt it's the slot on the 3400 as the 96MB card works fine, but I'll give it all a good...

    Powerbook 3400c RAM weirdness

A while ago I picked up a couple of new old stock 64MB RAM sticks for a Powerbook 3400 for cheap. I later acquired a 3400/240. It works great and already has a 96MB stick in it for a total of 112MB. While going through the mounds of accumulation in my computer room recently I happened upon the...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

I did try some minimal configs. Sometimes they were better, sometimes not. Sometimes it was something particular that should work (none of these machines could reliably use a video card past a Rage 128 when I know for absolute certain that they could back in the day, same with OS 9 compatible...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

Yeah, I figured the MP extensions were going to be bad once I got past Mac OS 7 since Daystar lost their license (which apparently included even supporting their clones) before it got much further than that. I was hoping to at least get 8.1 on it. I can try again, but a lot of the issues with...

Already replaced the PRAM batteries. Component level repair will have to be the next step. I'm not holding out hope that it'll fix everything, but if it can bring these things back to normal levels of possessed then I'll call that a win. Heck, I just fiddled with a 7300 that was worse than any...

This was kinda my experience as well. First boot would often chime, but never give me video. It would usually work on a restart. And I was usually running these on a bench in a horizontal position, but I didn't see a difference in vertical orientation either.

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

The odd thing is that it did work previously. I'd set this machine up with a few different bits and pieces a couple years ago and don't remember a lot of trouble with the SSD on the internal IDE bus. When I came back to it recently I found that the SSD was dead, so I had to start over. I took a...

Yeah, it's a generic card. I figured it may not work or may have issues, but wanted to have a crack at it anyway. I thought the 3.3v issue was only with DA/QS machines? It doesn't allow my QS to boot as expected, but was fine in an MDD. The 9600 and the G3 both could see and use the card, but...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

I was still having problems even with very few extras. The Daystar was especially bad, even with only a few bits of period-appropriate hardware. Same with the 9600. There were things that didn't work even by themselves that should've, or that acted really odd and flaky, and a lot of this was...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

Pretty much. I had another crack at it today and finally found a combination that works. I reseated the personality card in the process, and I think Firewire + Gigabit + ATA66 card has fixed a lot of the flakiness I've seen. Even hooking the SSD up to the onboard IDE was creating problems. But...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

Yeah, pretty much. I tried paring it down to native Mac hardware and keeping it minimal, ie, the 9600 + Firmtek (and stock GPU), or 9600 + Mac Edition video cards only, but even that didn't work reliably. The Daystar was worse, even when using stock hardware as much as possible, and I know for...

Were these machines always so painful? Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe age hasn't been kind to them.

I've taken time during the holiday break to get back to souping up and fixing up a few oldies, and holy moly has it been frustrating. I've been tweaking and tinkering with old Macs for 20+ years off and on, but I don't remember it being this bad, and I'm guessing that aging electrical components...
